Game
Notes: "Opening day at Giants
stadium is always exciting and today you had the extra thought that it would be
the last time you sat in these exact same seats for an opening game in this stadium.
Hopefully we'll see some of the same familiar faces sitting around us next year
in the new stadium, and I'm sure there'll be many fond memories shared during
the games this season. Anyway, there were a lot of concerns during the offseason
on how the Giants offense would do without receivers like Amani Toomer and Plaxico
Burress. That question wasn't answered in the preseason games but
was better addressed today. It looks like our young group of receivers can actually
do the job. Steve Smith was the standout on a few important plays catching 6 passes
for 80 yards. Mario Manningham caught 3 passes for 58 yards including that
nice touchdown. Hakeem Nicks was doing well, but he had to leave the game with
an injury, as well as running back Danny Ware who was hurt early on returning
a kick. We didn't get to find out how well Ware would do spelling Jacobs and Bradshaw.
Meanwhile tight end Kevin Boss seemed like an after thought, but he was there
for Eli Manning at all the right times, with his 3 catches for 62 yards. The
Giants were hurting in the secondary but led by fist-fighting Corey Webster, they
certainly controlled Santana Moss. Antwaan Randle El actually picked up the most
yardage for the Redskins, and tight end Chris Cooley picked up their one touchdown
pass. Lawrence Tynes was reliable with his three fieldgoals, and that was great.
The Giants were too much for the Redskins today, and that's just fine for me.
I'm looking forward to seeing them knocking off the Cowboys next week."
Game Notes: "Before
we say anything - Welcome back Osi Umenyiora. Nice play in your first game back
after missing a full season, knocking the ball loose from Jason Campbell and running
it in for a touchdown. So how did new defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan do in
handling the defense that was handed down to him by Steve
Spagnuolo and further supplemented by Jerry Reese in the offseason? Well you
have to say he's off to a great start. The defense held the Redskins to 272 total
yards, forced two turnovers and picked up 3 sacks. The
Giants offense seemed well balanced and they did much better than expected with
the passing game. Of course they like to run the ball and our bruising 264 pound
Brandon Jacobs had to get it past a stacked Redskins defensive line fortified
by their new 320 pound free agent acquisition, Albert Haynesworth. Our change
of pace running back this year is Ahmad Bradshaw, listed at 198, and he actually
had better stats averaging 5 yards a carry on his 12 attempts. Brandon Jacobs
might have softened things up a bit with his 16 carries for 46 yards. Jacobs and
Bradshaw also caught a few passes to keep the Redskins defense off balance. Tom
Coughlin had said that rookie Hakeem
Nicks would be one of four receivers along with Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith and
Mario Manningham, who would play an important role in the team's offense during
today's game. Well the
Giants' first-round pick had to leave the game early and we'll have to see what
he is capable of down the line. Next
week the Giants have another division game to play when they travel to Dallas.
If you caught Dallas playing at Tampa Bay or heard some of the news from that
game, the Cowboys had some trouble early on handling running back Cadillac Williams
and former Giant Derrick Ward, but they ultimately won out over Tampa Bay. The
Giants will play at Tampa Bay the following week after Dallas and will also see
how those two running backs do against their defense."
