Game Notes:
"The last time we got to see the Redskins play against our guys was
at Giants Stadium last December. They had lost four straight games and
because of a quarterback injury, were stuck putting Todd Collins on the
field to lead their offense, and he hadn't started a game in 10 years.
No matter, the Giants lost that game 22-10.
Everyone kept dropping the ball on Eli, Lawrence Tynes missed a field
goal, Brandon Jacobs ran well, but so did Clinton Portis for them. Both
Moss brothers played. Shockey ended up with a broken leg. It was a hard
game to forget.
Well, that was then and this is now. It seems you don't often get to see
the Giants win a game unless you're in front of a TV set. Well, they brought
it home for us fans tonight, and if you were lucky to see it live, you
have another game that's going to be hard to forget.
Eli Manning, the MVP of the Super Bowl, scored the first touchdown of
the new NFL season by running the ball into the endzone. Just try and
forget that. Plaxico Burress was catching everything. Brandon Jacobs couldn't
be stopped. Justin Tuck and the defense were awesome. It was a great start
for the new season."
Game Notes:
"The Redskins made some
big changes in the offseason, a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator,
and a new defensive coordinator. That's a lot to get together by the opening
game of a new season and they just weren't ready for prime time. Jim Zorn's
West Coast offense replaced Joe Gibbs run-oriented attack. That ended
up with a total of 11 first downs and 209 total yards compared to the
Giants with 21 first downs and 354 total yards. Of course that was reflected
in the final score and time of possesion which was 35:43 for the Giants
and 24:17 for the Redskins.
The Giants started off strong and were up 13-0. Then with with only three
minutes to go in the first half things misfired. The Giants had a 2nd
and 2 from the Redskins 26 yard line and were only able to come up with
a field goal to make it 16-0. Admittedly things only looked worse than
they were because the Giants offense had been doing so well up to that
point. But it was time to remember that this was also the first game of
the season for the Giants as well as the Redskins. Another reminder of
that came along on the ensuing kickoff where the special teams unit allowed
a 50 yard return. Then the Giants defense took their turn at opening game
jitters with a foolish 15 yard facemask penalty that allowed the Redskins
to continue their drive. The net result was 7 points for the Redskins
before the end of the half. BTW - It was also the first game of the season
for the refs, because it looked like a bad call on that facemask penalty.
The Redskins finished the 2007
season ranked eighth in total defense and they started to click in the
second half. The Giants couldn't score, but the Redskins were in the same
boat, so the game ended with a 16-7 victory by the Giants. There was outstanding
play by Plaxico Burress. He doesn't practice and is always last minute,
so the Giants let him wait to the last minute before restructuring his
contract today. Brandon Jacobs played great and the Giants should have
given him a new one instead of letting him play out his final year. Eli
Manning made a few mistakes, but still played a great game finishing with
19 completions on 35 attempts for 216 yards. The Giants look game-ready
out of the box."
