Giants
Bye Week Review
Sun Nov 15, Week 10 in the NFL - Bye Week for the Giants

Giants (5-4)
The Chargers beat the Giants when their last drive of the game resulted in a touchdown that put them up 21-20. The Giants got the ball at their 29 yard line with only 21 seconds left and after two incomplete passes and a sack, the game was over. The Giants got their bye week to mull things over, and the Chargers prepared for a game with the Eagles.

Sounds good but.
Lawrence Tynes leads the NFL with 82 points. It's great to be in the lead in something especially when it deals with points, but look a little closer. Having lots of field goals means you're falling short on turning good field position into touchdowns. Last week the Giants made it into the red zone four times and came away with two touchdowns and two fieldgoals = 20 points. The Chargers got to the red zone only three times but their trips all ended in touchdowns = 21 points. The math is obvious and can't be overstated - touchdowns beat fieldgoals.

Giants Offense - They can get there.
The Giants have gotten to the red zone more than every other team in the NFL except for the undefeated New Orleans Saints. Once there to enjoy the good field position, they really need to cut the celebration short, because of the obvious next task at hand. So hold the confetti because they have become the 28th team in the NFL in their ability to actually get it past the goal line from that point. We bring this up from time to time that Tom Coughlin continually angers the football gods with his insistence that the red zone be called the "green zone". They continually remind him that it is not.

Giants Defense.
OK here we go - now you're really talking about a "green zone" but unfortunately it applies to teams playing against against the Giants. The Giants are the absolute worst team in the league having allowed 22 touchdowns in 29 opponent red zone possessions. Despite what shaped up to be an awesome defensive unit in the offseason, linebacker Gerris Wilkinson has just joined safety Kenny Phillips on injured reserve, and there has been much playing time missed by cornerback Aaron Ross (hamstring), linebacker Michael Boley (knee) and defensive lineman Chris Canty (calf). Need we remind you of Coughlin's take on injuries being a "state of mind" on his very first day as head coach of the Giants. Those same impetuous football gods have been on him for that one ever since as well and they just won't let it go.

What now?
Because of the bye, the team practiced only on Wednesday this week, and when they return they will gear up to face the challenge of the difficult final seven games. Three of them are against division teams back to back, and one is coming off a short work week, which includes traveling to Denver for a Thanksgiving Day game. Of course it all starts with the next opponent and that will be Atlanta next week.

Coming up.
The NFL has flexible scheduling for Weeks 11-17. Sunday afternoon games may be moved to Sunday night. The Giants next two home games will remain as scheduled: Nov. 22 vs. Atlanta, 1PM and Dec. 6 vs. Dallas, 4:15PM. If you have the opportunity, you can scout out the Giants next opponent, the Atlanta Falcons, this Sunday at 1PM when they play the Carolina Panthers.

NFC East.
On Sunday at 1PM the (2-6) Redskins host (6-2) Denver. Denver had won six in a row before losing their last two games to Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Later in the day at 4:15PM, the (6-2) Cowboys play at Green Bay (4-4), and the (5-3) Eagles play in San Diego (5-3). Dallas is the only NFC East team favored to win this week.

From thirty two to sixteen to nine to seven to five to four to three to two.
The Colts in the AFC and the Saints in the NFC continued their wining streaks and now have 8-0 records. The Saints play at (1-7) St. Louis and the the Colts host the (6-2) Patriots. Tampa Bay won their game last week so now there are no undefeated teams left in the NFL. They join the 1-7 ranks with four other teams, Detroit, St. Louis, Cleveland and Kansas City.
