Giants (6-2) vs Cowboys
(1-7) The Cowboys
played last Sunday night at Green Bay and showed that they can't get things going
without having Tony Romo on the field. The 45-7 beating they took at the hands
of the Packers gives them a 1-7 record and the owner wasn't happy. The Giants
won for the first time at Qwest Field. It was an impressive 41-7 victory over
the Seahawks that stretched their winning streak to five games in a row. They
start the second half of their season as the division leader and with a home game
against the Cowboys. Dallas
Cowboys. The fans started off the season with high expectations,
thinking "Super Bowl" in their own stadium and now this
1-7 team is a disappointing 0-4 in front of their home crowd. Their last four
home games start with two back to back right after they face the Giants. They'll
take on (2-6) Detroit who'll be coming off a visit to
(0-8) Buffalo, and then the Cowboys host the
(6-3) Saints on Thanksgiving day.
The Saints, coming off a bye, host the (4-4) Seahawks before
taking that trip to Dallas. Philadelphia (5-3) and Washington (4-4) come up back
to back on Dec 12 and Dec 19, and it could be an 'early season' for the Cowboy
home fans in more ways than just that December date. It already became an early
season for head coach Wade Phillips at the beginning of the week when owner
Jerry Jones decided that enough was enough and handed things over to Jason Garrett. Cowboys
Offense. Quarterback Jon Kitna had two
interceptions in Green Bay, giving him a total of six in two starts since replacing
Tony Romo who was injured in the last outing against the Giants. The Cowboys running
game against the Packers was just 39 rushing yards, with Felix Jones going for
16 yards on five carries and Marion Barber 14 on his six attempts. Overall they
were held to a season-low 205 yards. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett runs
the whole team now as well, so what's he going to change to improve the running
game or Kitna's passing? Cowboys
Defense. Unlike the Seattle team the Giants
faced last week, the Cowboys defense is intact fielding the same 11 players who
started the season. They have allowed 124 points to be scored in the last 12 quarters.
The offense can maybe fall back on missing Tony Romo for their poor performance,
but what's the excuse for the defense? That's maybe what Jerry Jones got to thinking
when he excused Wade Phillips who was also the defensive coordinator. So
defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni has taken over. Can he come up with something
to stop an offense that put up 41 points against them a few weeks ago? Giants
Offense. This group had a nice outing last
week in Seattle. How often does Eli Manning come out of a game early because the
team is so far ahead? The line reshuffled a few times but did not let the loud
Seahawks crowd goad them into a cascade of false starts, and they blocked well
for a rushing attack that gained 197 yards. If the Dallas defense plays more up
to their real capabilities the Giants offense will have their hands full considering
that even the shuffled line is no longer intact. They will be missing backup center
Adam Koets, out for the season with a torn ACL, and David Diehl off the field
for the first time in 120 games. They have to keep the Cowboys away from Eli
Manning playing without reliable Steve Smith, who's out for this game and maybe
a few more. Smith usually draws double coverage which now can shift over to Hakeem
Nicks who burned the Cowboys with two touchdowns last time. Giants
Defense. If they didn't start the demise
of the Cowboys who were 1-4 going into their first matchup, they certainly contributed
to it when they knocked Tony Romo out of that game. They now face that same deficient
offense in the first of their three division matchups over the next four games
that they play. Despite their reputation against opposing quarterbacks, they have
been well disciplined in their gameplay. Last week they even laid off of putting
pressure on the quarterback, played tight coverage and focused on stopping the
run. Best to worst. No
team in the NFL is undefeated and the best record is held by the Falcons (7-2)
in the AFC. They defeated the Ravens (6-3) on Thursday night. Next best are the
6-2 Jets, Patriots, and Steelers in the AFC. and the Giants in the NFC. This weeks
matchups include a Sunday night Patriots and Steelers game. There
is still one team that has yet to win a game, the Buffalo Bills (0-8) in the AFC.
The Bills will host the Lions (2-6) and are favored to win their game. NFC
East. The Giants play the Cowboys in the late Sunday afternoon game,
and Monday night the Eagles (5-3) travel to Washington to play the Redskins (4-4).The
Giants and Eagles are favored to win their games.

Notes.
Giants for the the fifth time in Tom Coughlin’s seven years have owned a record
of 6-2 or better midway through the season. Giants were 7-1 in 2008, and the
two other times they were 5-3. Giants
Tom Coughlin has a 41-15 record (.732) in first halves, but only 21-27 (.438)
in second halves. Giants’ offense has
averaged 36 points per game in its last four outings. Giants
David Diehl has a 40-percent tear of his right hamstring and muscle issues in
his hip. He will miss this game and end his streak of 120 straight regular-season
starts. Cowboys have given up 121 points
in the past three games combined. Cowboys
have been outscored, 114-39 since leading the Giants 20-7 in their Week 9 Monday
night game. Cowboys punter Mat McBriar
has had 144 career punts downed inside opponents’ 20 yard line. That's tied
with Danny White for the second-most in their franchise history. Cowboys
fired coach Wade Phillips had a 34-22 record in his 3 1/2 seasons with the team. A
nice record up to 2010 considering 7 of those 22 loses came this season. Cowboys
coach Jason Garrett was with the Giants for four seasons (2000-03) as a backup
quarterback.
