Sun
Nov 11, 4:15 pm - Cowboys at Giants Giants(6-2)
vs Cowboys (7-1). This won't be anything
like the season opener where the Giants lost to the Cowboys 45-35. The first game
of every season often holds a few surprises, and that one revealed that the defenses
- on both teams - were not as ready to play as the offenses. Neither team gave
up or scored as many points in their next game. Since then, the Giants defensive
unit has been it's strength and they need to show Tony Romo that his once passing
for 345 yards and 4 touchdowns against them was just a former memory to reflect
back on in his later years. Giants
Defense. The Giants gave up 80 points
in their first two games, but just 79 since in their six-game winning streak.
First year defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's coaching might have been confusing
at first, but it seems to have kicked in. Now the Giants lead the NFL with 30
sacks after landing just one in their first game loss at Dallas. That first season
game had them lacking for a few other reasons as well. Michael Strahan was coming
off a 36-day training camp holdout. Osi Umenyiora had to leave the game after
the first defensive series. Mathias Kiwanuka was making his first career start
at strong side linebacker. Sam Madison missed most of that game with a strained
hamstring, and now rookie Aaron Ross is playing as one of the corners. The only
knock after six very impressive defensive games is that it hasn't been played
against strong competition. This game should settle that. Giants
Offense. Plaxico Burress had nine catches
for 144 yards in the season opener against Dallas. He and Eli Manning combined
for 3 touchdowns, and a team racking up 35 points should have enough to win, but
they didn't. They'd probably be happy scoring 35 points this Sunday. On the year,
Plaxico Burress leads the team with 37 catches for 564 yards and 8 touchdowns.
He does this while missing practice and playing on a badly sprained right ankle.
Manning would like more opportunities to work on new formations and all, but maybe
they're better off keeping it simple since mistakes can be costly. Brandon
Jacobs is hot, leading the team with 450 yards on just 80 carries, averaging 5.6
yards per carry, and a good running game keeps the other team's offense off the
field. It also keeps the pass rushers off your quarterback. The running back group
- Brandon Jacobs, Reuben Droughns and Derrick Ward - have combined for the league's
sixth-best rushing attack. Cowboys
Offense. Tony Romo has a 100.4 passer
rating, and has thrown 19 touchdowns. He has a really big talented line in front
of him going against the Giants speed, and if they falter, Romo can be dangerous
throwing out of the pocket. Terrell Owens has 44 catches for 730 yards, and 6
touchdowns, but tight end Jason Witten leads the team with 45 catches. Witten
is the one who really burned the Giants in their first game, catching 6 passes
for 116 yards. His 45 catches this season puts him third among NFL tight ends,
behind Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez (52) and San Diego's Antonio Gates (47). Meanwhile,
Terrell Owens is coming off his best game in his two seasons with the Cowboys.
He had 10 catches for 174 yards at Philadelphia, his former team. Marion Barber
and Julius Jones combined for 131 yards rushing in that first game and now have
888 rushing yards on the season. Cowboys have the best NFC third-down offense
- 49 percent (51 of 104), and the Cowboys offensive line has permitted only 11
sacks on Romo to date. Cowboys
Defense. The Cowboys left that first game
against the Giants with the 27th-ranked defense in the NFL. Now Dallas has the
eighth-ranked overall defense in the league, and is fifth against the run, giving
up only 84.4 yards per game. DeMarcus Ware, a former first-round draft choice
and 2006 Pro Bowler, leads the team with 7 sacks. Corner Anthony Henry who suffered
a high ankle sprain and missed three games, is tied for the NFL lead with five
interceptions. He returned last week and had one interception to increase his
career total to 27. Tank Johnson with his half-season suspension over, will
be playing in his first game since the Super Bowl when he started on the defensive
line for the Chicago Bears. Cowboys nose tackle Jason Ferguson was lost for the
season after tearing his right biceps tendon in that first game against the Giants.
Johnson will be used at times mostly on first and second downs in place of current
starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff, keeping Ratliff fresher for third down plays. Giants
or Cowboys? Both teams started the season
with horrible defenses. Now one ranks seventh and the other eighth in the NFL,
second and third in the NFC. It will be a really big offensive line going up against
a very fast defensive line. It will be one team who looked bad winning in their
last outing playing on a sloppy field after traveling across the ocean to play
against winless Miami. It will be one team who has looked bad only in their one
loss playing against undefeated New England. It will be one well-rested team
coming off their bye week and playing at home. It will be one team playing their
second division game on the road and facing yet another at home next week. One
team has beaten six others who have a combined record of 13-36. One team has seven
wins over teams with a combined record of 19-37. Check

Cowboys In last Sunday's 38-17 win over Philadelphia converted 8 of 12 third downs
(67 percent). Eagles entered the game with the NFL's seventh-ranked third-down
defense (37 percent). Giants have six
wins at the halfway point of the season for the third straight year. Giants
have not been swept in a season series by the Cowboys since 2003. Giants
Michael Strahan has played in 28 Giants-Cowboys games during his career. Giants
lead the NFL with 30 sacks after logging just one in their week 1 loss at Dallas.
Last season they had a total of 32 sacks. Giants
on opening night gave up six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown to Dallas tight
end Jason Witten. Giants in the next seven games allowed tight ends an average
of four receptions and 36 yards a game. Giants
will wear their red jerseys and are asking fans to do the same. Giants
will host their 11th annual food drive Sunday. Fans can bring canned or non-perishable
foods to ShopRite trucks parked at Gates A, B and C or leave with volunteers at
Gate D prior to the game. Former Giants
coach Jim Fassel makes his return to Giants Stadium for this game. Fassel
will work the game as a color analyst for Westwood One radio along with Harry
Kalas. This Game
