Cincinnati at Giants
Giants (2-0) vs Cincinnati
(0-2).
If you're a big football fan but can't remember much about the Bengals,
it's not because you are going senile. In 2005 they went 11-5 and
made the playoffs, but that was the first time they did it in 15 years.
In 2006 they were 8-8, and last year they finished at 7-9. They started
this season off with a loss at Baltimore and then lost to Kerry Collins
and his Tennessee Titans 24-7. You remember him right? See you're
not senile after all. Cincinnati's scoring to date has been a field
goal, a 65 yard fumble recovery touchdown, and one running touchdown.
They have scored 17 points and given up 41 in their two losses.
Kerry Collins.
So how's he been doing since he left the Giants? Lets just say that
he threw a touchdown pass last week for the first time in 2 years.
Kerry is the backup quarterback for the Titans and he was playing
only because starter Vince Young was out with a knee injury. Kerry
had a nice game in adverse weather conditions, dealing with 60-mph
wind gusts. With Vince still hurting, Kerry will be the starter
again this week and head coach Jeff Fisher said they are sticking
with him as their starting quarterback as long as the team keeps
winning. So Kerry Collins will get the 151st start of his career
as the Titans try to extend their 2-0 win streak against Houston
this Sunday.
Cincinnati Offense.
The offensive unit has scored just one touchdown in two games. It
must have been mind boggling to them watching the Dallas 41-37 win
over the Eagles last Monday night. Quarterback Carson Palmer has
thrown for over 4000 yards the past two seasons, but his QB rating
is slipping. He threw 26 touchdowns but also a career high 20 interceptions
last year, and is off to a bad start this year with no touchdowns
and 3 interceptions. The offensive linemen have kept the sacks low,
but Palmer gets a lot of pressure and gets hit. He broke his nose
in the third preseason game and sprained his left ankle last week.
Chad Ocho Cinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are Pro Bowl receivers but
they both had preseason injuries too and are off to slow starts.
The running game is averaging just 3 yards a carry. This group is
only 5 of 26 on third-down conversions, and are ranked 31st in the
NFL in yards per game.
Ocho Cinco.
If you occasionally follow the Cincinnati Bengals and somehow don't
recognize that name, good news You're not senile again! It's really
Chad Johnson. He wears number 85 and has changed his name to Ocho
Cinco. He'll be running around the field with the Johnson name on
his jersey this week. You still might not notice him though, because
to date he's had only five catches even though he's one of the Bengals
leading receivers. Even though Chad Ocho Cinco legally changed his
name, Reebok won't let him change the jersey because they'll be
stuck with the leftovers. He wanted to be traded. Was it because
he doesn't want to play on a losing team? It would be one way to
settle the jersey issue. Who knows with this guy? His head coach
has called him Ocho Psycho. Will he show up for this game and be
a factor?
Cincinnati Defense.
Cincinnati's defense is ranked 30th in the NFL with 203 yards allowed
per game. They were last in the NFL with 22 sacks in 2007, and are
still there, having recorded just one sack this year. They'll be
facing a tough Giants rushing attack from Brandon Jacobs, Derrick
Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw, who rushed for a combined 203 yards last
week. They'll also have to deal with the fact that the Giants are
continually working at perfecting a big passing game, and they will
be at a disadvantage if one of their top cornerbacks, Johnathan
Joseph (ankle), can't play.
Former Giant - Dhani
Jones.
He was a linebacker with the Giants from 2000-2003, then played
with Philadelphia before joining the Bengals in 2007. He was second
on the team in tackles, and has averaged 10 tackles a game these
past two outings Dhani is familiar with a Steve Spagnuolo style
of defense from his time with the Eagles.
Former Giant - Geoffrey
Pope.
He was a cornerback with the Giants this past postseason and played
in the win over the Cowboys and Green Bay. Pope was waived on final-cut
day and then was waived off the practice squad and signed by the
Bengals to their practice squad. He's been moved up to the active
roster and may see some playing time against the Giants. His recent
knowledge of the Giants defense could help the Bengals figure a
few things out for this game.
Big Plays.
It seems the Giants are tuning up on these early season games against
weaker teams, trying to perfect their 'Big Play' skills. Eli did
pretty well last week in Sunday's 41-13 win over the Rams. He completed
20 of 29 passes for 260 yards and had a passer rating of 131.4,
which was his highest in any regular-season game.
Tight ends -No catches.
Is this a problem or not? The Giants are the only team in the NFL
without a catch by a tight end. Well, as you read above, the Giants
are looking for big plays and seem to be willing to experiment at
this early stage of the season against weaker opponents. They are
going for the gold, and gambling on the deep throws against the
sure short pass completions. Other times, according to Eli Manning,
some of the shots that might be headed to tight ends are going to
Steve Smith instead, and he has done quite well with them..
The NFC East.
Just as in the week before, the only team able to beat an NFC East
team is an NFC East team. They are 6-2 as a division with the only
losses being to Washington playing the Giants, and Philadelphia
playing Dallas. Coming up, is Arizona at Washington, Philadelphia
at Pittsburgh, Dallas at Green Bay.
