Giants (1-0) vs Cowboys
(1-0) Last week the Cowboys opened their season at
Tampa Bay and came away with a 34-21 win. They did it in good fashion with a 344
yard aerial attack that left the Buccaneers secondary gasping. Later that day
the Giants put on their own aerial show and addressed one of their suspected weaknesses
when Eli Manning completed 20 of 29 passes for 256 yards by spreading the ball
around to seven different receivers. The Giants enjoyed an opening day 23-17 victory
over division rival Washington. From
thirty two to sixteen. OK
so after week one, 16 teams in the NFL are undefeated with a 1-0 record and the
rest sit at 0-1. Now without thinking too much about it, it would seem that if
all those teams that lost win this week and vice versa, things would be all tied
up at 1-1 right? Well, not really, because some of last week's winning and losing
teams don't play against each other. So considering this week's match ups (ties
excluded from this math), the possible undefeated teams will drop from 16 to 11
and the possible winless teams will drop to 10. We'll see how things progress
from here next week. Quarterback
- Cowboys Tony Romo got his team off to
quite a start throwing 3 long touchdown passes (80, 66, 42 yards). He threw for
a career-high 353 yards averaging 22.1 yards a completion. The Cowboys didn't
miss a beat without Terrell Owens on the team as Romo became the league's leading
passer with a quarterback rating of 140.6. Tampa Bay recorded no sacks on Romo,
but that's not their style. In the past two years, the Bucs have ranked 27th and
24th in that area. Whatever their style is supposed to be, Romo's average of better
than 22 yards per completion was a record against Tampa Bay's defense for a quarterback
with at least 15 completions. Quarterback
- Giants Eli Manning kept the Giants offense
continually moving on a day when Brandon Jacobs picked up only 46 yards on 16
carries against a stacked defense. Manning kept the aggressive Redskins attack
off balance even with them pressuring him for one lost fumble, and one interception.
He spread the ball around, mostly hitting Steve Smith, but Mario Manningham caught
some too including a 30-yard touchdown pass. Kevin Boss had 3 catches for 62 yards,
Hakeem Nicks and Domenik Hixon, and running backs Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw were
were targets as well. Cowboys
Defense They led the NFL with 59 sacks last year, but
didn't get any against Tampa Bay last week. They also gave up 450 total yards,
so they have to thank their offense for carrying the game last week. They let
Tampa Bay gain 174 yards on the ground for an average of 5.6 yards a carry. That's
not the best way to tune up for a game against Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad
Bradshaw. They allowed Byron Leftwich to complete 25 of 41 passes for 276 yards
and 1 touchdown. They were working in four new starters in their first game of
the season and will be better prepared for the Giants this week. Giants
Defense They gave up only 272 total yards to the Redskins,
forced two turnovers, got three sacks and contributed to the score with a forced
fumble recovery and touchdown by Osi Umenyiora.
It wasn't a bad day at all, but it will be tougher this week going up against
the Cowboys. You saw what they did in Tampa Bay, and the Giants secondary is still
missing cornerback Aaron Ross and has a few other players hurting, Kenny Phillips
(knee), Michael Johnson (shoulder), Kevin Dockery (hamstring).
Giant Concerns. The
Giants controlled the ball and won last week, but they did not perform well in
the red zone. The offense scored just one touchdown and settled for three fieldgoals.
Osi Umenyiora's touchdown was a nice bonus as the Giants outplayed the Redskins
but let them stay in the game. They can't afford to do that with the Cowboys.
Cowboys
Stadium. The Cowboys have a brand new stadium, and that
just adds to the excitement of this Sunday night matchup between the Giants and
Cowboys. ESPN.com's Matt Mosley calls it "A tribute to excess", and
went on to say that It was Cowboys owner Jerry Jones vision to build the greatest
stadium in the world -- and he just might have pulled it off. Here's the link
- Cowboys
Stadium: A tribute to excess. Here's another from the NY Times that says "The
result is a somewhat crude reworking of old ideas, one that looks especially unoriginal"
- Supersize
Cowboys Stadium With a Helping of Sprawl. You can make up your own mind on
Sunday. NFC
East. The Eagles (1-0) host the New Orleans Saints (1-0) Sunday at
1:00PM at the same time the Rams (0-1) play at Washington (0-1). The Redskins
and Cowboys are favored to win their games and the Saints are favored over the
Eagles.

Santana Moss and Giants cornerback Corey Webster were
fined $5,000 apiece by the NFL for their tussle
during last week’s game. Giants Eli Manning
has led the Giants to the playoffs for four straight years. Giants
DT Chris Canty has been ruled out of his reunion game in Dallas with a "severe"
calf strain. Giants are 47-32-5 in road
openers (.595). Cowboys are 34-14-1 (.708) in home openers. Cowboys
new stadium sports a 160-foot long, 90-foot high video board. Titans punter
A.J. Trapasso hit the HD board in a preseason game and the NFL Competition Committee
has ruled that if the ball struck the board during a game the down would be replayed.
