Sun Sept 14, 1:00 PM -
Giants at St. Louis
Giants (1-0) vs Rams
(0-1).
Can the Rams catch a break? They managed a meager 3-13 record after
losing their first 8 games of the season last year. The whole NFC
East gets thrown at them in the first six games and they get the Patriots
right after that for game number seven. The Rams had to open last
week on the road against the Eagles (lost 38-3) and now they host
the Giants who are looking to continue their road game win streak
to 12. Worse yet in their game, the Rams lost both DLE Leonard Little
and LG Jacob Bell to hamstring injuries. Also the Giants have had
an extended amount of time to prepare since they opened the season
early on a Thursday night.
Headlines.
The St. Louis Rams made big headlines back in 1999 with Kurt Warner,
when "The Greatest Show on Turf" offense led them to a Super
Bowl Championship. Kurt is still making headlines. Last week he
quarterbacked Arizona to a 1-0 start with a 23-13 win over their
division rival San Francisco. His team was the only one in the division
to finish with a win, so they're on top and you get to see them
play the Giants on Nov 2. Meanwhile, the Rams don't want to look
at any headlines right now.
Last week - Rams.
The Rams gave up 522 yards of offense to the Eagles. Donovan McNabb
threw for 361 yards and 3 touchdowns against them and those numbers
were with him leaving the game early. Meanwhile, Rams quarterback
Marc Bulger threw for less than half of McNabb's yards - 156, had
no touchdowns and he was sacked 4 times. After watching this game
being played out in Philadelphia, the St. Louis fans can only hope
that their worst game of season is out of the way early on and that
it's not an indication of more to come. Unfortunately, that loss
was bigger than any they suffered last year.
Last week - Giants.
The only complaint the fans had from the Super Bowl season was that
the Giants did most of their winning on the road. Well they started
off on the right foot this time by giving their paying crowd a nice
division win at home. After starting with a small Super Bowl celebration
on the field, they went on to beat Washington 16-7. The defense
was mostly solid throughout the game, yielding only those 7 points.
The offense started strong on the opening drive, but then failed
to put up big points even with Plaxico Burress catching 10 passes
for 133 yards and Brandon Jacobs running for 116 yards while averaging
5.5 yards per carry. John Carney filled in nicely for the sidelined
Lawrence Tynes by making all three field goals.
Cuts.
The Rams cut Kurt Warner loose in 2004 and he was snapped up by
the Giants. If you recall, rookie quarterback Eli Manning watched
him lead the Giants to a 5-2 record before taking over that year.
The Rams released fullback Madison Hedgecock in 2007 and the Giants
snapped again having lost Jim Finn for the season to a shoulder
injury. Hedgecock was drafted by the Rams in the the seventh round
in 2005 and played in all the games, but they thought they had a
better prospect in Richard Owens, who they dropped before this season.
Hedgecock has a good attitude, "I block, I catch the ball sometimes,
and I run the ball in my dreams." He's looking forward to playing
against the team that cut him.
The NFC East.
Things just started and it will be interesting to see how long it
lasts, but so far the only team able to beat an NFC East team is
an NFC East team. They are 3-1 as a division with the only loss
being Washington playing the Giants. Coming up, is Giants at St.
Louis, New Orleans at Washington, and on Monday night, Philadelphia
at Dallas.

49ers.
Last week coach Scott Linehan deferred
the opening kickoff after the Rams won the coin toss.
Rams offensive coordinator Al Saunders
was Washington's offensive coordinator last year.
