(7-6) vs Redskins (4-9) Last Sunday
the Redskins ended their
three game losing streak, beating the Raiders 34-13. Instead of
pulling one of their fourth quarter fades, they increased their
three point margin by adding another 17 while granting the Raiders
none. Meanwhile the Giants had one of their typical hard fought
battles with the Eagles. While managing to score 38 points, they
allowed the Eagles to score even more and so dropped the game
to them with a 45-38 final score. Washington
Redskins With last week's
win the Redskins saw their record move up to 4-9. That might not
seem like much of an accomplishment, but after three consecutive
losses in which they've blown fourth-quarter leads, it's certainly
a boost. They almost pulled that off in the previous game against
New Orleans, but with only 1:52 left to play, they blew a 23 yard
field goal that would have put them up 10 points. The Saints tied
it up and won in overtime even though the Redskins had the ball
first. They turned it over at their own 37 yard line and so undefeated
New Orleans was able to escape with a narrow 33-30 win. That meant
that they lost the last three games prior to their Raiders victory,
to Dallas, Philadelphia and New Orleans by just seven total points.
Redskins
Offense. It took most of
the season, but the Redskins offense finally seems to be putting
things together. Two games ago against New Orleans, Jason Campbell
completed 30 of 42 passes for a career-high 367 yards and 3 touchdowns
with just one interception. Then last week Campbell completed
16 of 28 passes for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tight end Fred
Davis has been a nice scoring target lately for Campbell, picking
up 4 touchdowns in his last three games. Their offensive line
has seen three players go onto injured reserve. Redskins
Defense. Rookie DE/LB Brian
Orakpo, was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Orakpo
had four sacks against the Raiders which gave him 11 for the season
to put him in a tie with DE Andre Carter for the team lead. They
were also good against the run, holding the Raiders to just 65
rushing yards, although you can't brag about stopping the Raiders
ground game. All in all this defense is ranked seventh in the
league and being ranked first in the red zone means that they
can create problems for the Giants who have struggled there. Giants
Offense. You can't complain
too much about Eli Manning these days. He
shouldn't have to throw for 391 yards and 3 touchdowns and still
lose the game. Steve Smith continues to be hot and his 7 receptions
gave him 85 on the year and broke Amani Tomer's team record. The
big matchup problem will be in the the Giants red zone offense,
which is ranked 25th in the league, scoring touchdowns less than
half the time they have had the opportunities to do so. Giants
Defense. It's not really
a football saying but you sometimes read the adage 'The best defense
is a good offense'. That can work in a game of Chess, but the
Giants are seemingly trying to apply it to football with the expected
poor results. It's time for these defensive guys to put down the
books and pick up some tackling dummies. You have to go back to
over two months to find a single team they were able to hold to
20 points or under, and that was back in game five against pitiful
Oakland on October 11. They won three other games when they managed
it and have lost all the rest when they couldn't except for the
three where they had to put up 33, 34, and 31 points to win. Giant
Concerns. The Redskins
are a 4-9 team but are playing better than that right now. They
nearly surprised the Eagles and almost put an end to the Saints
perfect season. The Giants have a shot at the playoffs hoping
that Dallas will fold in their last three tough games while they
won't. The way the Giants have been playing, well that's a big
concern as this race is too
tight and any one slip in a game from here on out could be the
end. NFC
East. The NFC East
games are spread over three days. The (8-5) Cowboys will travel
to play unbeaten New Orleans (13-0) in a Saturday night game.
On Sunday at 1 PM, San Francisco (6-7) will play in Philadelphia
(9-7), and on Monday night the Giants play in Washington. The
Eagles and Giants are favored to win their games. From
thirty two to sixteen to nine to seven to five to four to three
to two. Two teams are still
undefeated and the Colts have already chalked up their win this
week because of a Thursday night game schedule. They are now 14-0
after beating the Jaguars. New Orleans will try to match that
when they play the the 8-5 Cowboys on Saturday Night.
