"The
Giants have now won three games, two in a row, and this time it was in front of
their MetLife crowd. Finally a home game win! That was great for the fans, and
the way Eli Manning played was amazing. He completed almost every pass. The mix
of his passing and Saquon Barkley running was just too much for the Tampa Bay
defense. Sometimes the Buccaneers were too much for our defense to handle.
The defensive group played hard, and didn't slip up much until the fourth quarter.
All the fans in the stadium had no choice but to be nervous when Tampa Bay cut
the Giants lead to just three points, and they did that twice before this game
was finally over. Before I get ahead of myself, I just want to say that it
felt so good to see the Giants playing the way they did, and getting to enjoy
a halftime break with them leading 14-7. You can imagine how I felt in the fourth
quarter when Odell Beckham Jr. caught a touchdown pass on a 3rd-and-5 to stretch
the lead to 31-14 in the fourth quarter. As I said earlier, Tampa Bay tried for
a comeback, but in the end failed with the Giants winning out 38-35. So the
Giants gave us their first home game win of the season. There are three more left,
and if they can continue to run the offense like they did today, that will be
something to see. Next week the Giants play in Philadelphia. If they can keep
their act together, the results could be much better than what we saw when they
played the Eagles last month."
"The
Giants held the lead for the entire game, though they allowed the gap to close
in the fourth quarter. The Tampa Bay offense was as impressive as expected, and
in this game with the Giants the Buccaneers had more total yardage, made more
first downs, and had more time of possession, but unfortunately for them, they
also had more turnovers. Despite the numbers, the Giants offense wasn't too shabby
with its performance. Eli Manning completed 17 of his 18 passes to nine different
receivers. Is it time to retire this quarterback? I don't think so. Saquon Barkley,
with only seven more carries than last week, ran the ball for 142 yards, gaining
more than twice the yardage. Better yet, two of Barkley's runs were for touchdowns
to go along with his 6-yard touchdown catch on the Giants opening drive. With
Barkley running the ball 27 times, the Tampa Bay defense couldn't just pass rush
as much as they would have liked, and that certainly helped Manning with the passing
game, though he still took four sacks. The Giants defense will certainly have
to review how they played in that fourth quarter. They almost gave the game away
by allowing the Buccaneers to score three touchdowns after Jameis Winston came
into the game to replace Ryan Fitzpatrick. It still wasn't enough for Tampa Bay,
thanks to the body of work the Giants defense did over the course of the full
game, which was 4 interceptions, with one being Alec Ogletree's 15-yard pick-six.
Three of those interceptions came with Fitzpatrick at the helm, and the defense
held him to no passing touchdowns, though he did have one running. Things
turned around real fast when Winston took over. Winston guided his team to those
three touchdowns, before throwing a 'let's hope this works' deep pass which was
intercepted with only 23 seconds left in the game. When the Giants defense let
down in the third quarter, giving up a touchdown, it was good to see the offense
come right back to score one of their own. They did that again at one point
in the fourth quarter to increase their lead to 10 points instead of three. If
the new issue for the Giants becomes ensuring how to hang onto a big lead, I'm
sure they'll be glad to deal with that. It's a lot better problem than what they've
been dealing with this whole season so far. Tampa Bay has worse, trying to figure
out which quarterback to start week to week. Next it's on to Philadelphia for
the Giants, looking to be in maybe their best form of this season when they confront
the Eagles this time out."
