"It
was a miserable night to be at MetLife Stadium. The weather was horrible, and
the way the Giants played was just as bad. After the way the Giants hung in and
almost won last week in Carolina, I was expecting so much more. Things looked
like they were coming together just in time for this game, and I was very disappointed. I'm
used to the Giants losing, I guess I could live with another loss, but they didn't
seem to have that spark and drive that I'm used to seeing. I almost felt like
I was watching another team play. Saquon Barkley was exciting to watch whenever
he got the ball, especially that one long 50 yard touchdown run and his 55 yard
catch. Eli Manning couldn't seem to get any big plays going with Odell Beckham
Jr., and anytime there was a 3rd down play it seemed the Giants came up short.
I thought the defense would play better considering they were at full strength
with Olivier Vernon back, but they gave up more points then they had all season.
I don't know what to say. It wasn't fun for the home fans. I just hope they do
better playing in Atlanta next week."
"Things
started off as bad as they could, with Eli Manning throwing an interception on
the second play of the game. It gave the Eagles great field position, and they
capitalized on it when quarterback Carson Wentz threw a touchdown pass to wide
receiver Alshon Jeffery. Saquon Barkley made it look as though things could take
turn for the good when he had a 46 yard run on the very next series, but that
drive fizzled out in the red zone when the Giants had to settle for a field goal
to make it a 7-3 game. The defense held on the next drive, but the Eagles
punt had the Giants starting on their own 9-yard line. That's where Michael Bennett
caused a sack fumble on Eli Manning which almost resulted in an Eagles touchdown.
Luckily Nate Solder, who was responsible for Bennett getting through, recovered
the ball for the Giants. After that scare, Manning was at the Giants 1-yard line
needing 18 yards for a first down. Everyone knew that Barkley was going to get
the ball in that spot, and he gained 3 yards. Manning then connected with Odell
Beckham Jr. for the first time in the game, and Beckham worked to get the 12 yards
that he did, but it was short of the first down. After the punt, the Eagles
had great field position at the Giants 44-yard line, and another touchdown built
their lead up to 14-3. No one knew it at the time, but that was all the Eagles
would need, as the Giants were able to add one field goal and a touchdown before
this game was officially over. You actually kind of felt it was over when the
Giants managed to get that field goal, and the Eagles quickly responded with a
four play drive that ended with a touchdown that increased their lead to 21-6.
For whatever reason, the defense was letting down. The Eagles were busy scoring
touchdowns and the Giants settling for field goals, even after having a first-and-goal
at the Eagles 4-yard line. The Giants were playing without their top two tight
ends Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison. Those two are averaging about 10 yards a catch,
and their blocking abilities were helping a struggling offensive line. Would having
had one of them for this game made a difference? In the end, the Giants lost to
the Eagles 34-13. The defense certainly could have played better, and the offense
is something Pat Shurmur will have to figure out. He'll have to do it fast if
the Giants have any chance of making something out of this season."
