lose to the Eagles 34-29. Eli Manning was 37 of 57 for 434 yards, 3 TDs, and
1 INT. Wayne Gallman rushed for 39 yards on 8 carries, and caught 6 passes
for 40 yards. Shane Vereen rushed for 15 yards on 5 carries, and caught 5 passes
for 15 yards. Orleans Darkwa rushed for 7 yards on 9 carries and 1 TD, and
caught 1 pass for 9 yards. Sterling Shepard caught 11 passes for 139 yards
and 1 TD. Evan Engram caught
8 passes for 87 yards, and had 1 carry for 14 yards. Roger Lewis caught 4 passes
for 74 yards. Tavarres King caught 2 passes for 70 yards and 2 TDs.
Olivier Vernon had 1 sack. Aldrick
Rosas kicked a 28 yard field goal. "It
was exciting to see the Giants score a touchdown on the opening drive. Although
that was offset a bit when the Eagles blocked the extra point attempt. Then they
scored a touchdown to take a 7-6 lead. The Giants couldn't rely on the running
game and Eli Manning was forced to pass to make things happen, and he did so.
He got the Giants right back on top again, finishing his next drive with a touchdown
pass to Tavarres King. The defense played better this time out, getting a
sack on Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, and then Manning took over again. This
time he hit Sterling Shepard with a pass that went 67 yards for a touchdown. The
Giants were up 20-7 when Manning threw an interception, and that's when things
started to turn around. The Eagles only had to go 20 yards for a touchdown, and
they did to make the score 20-14. The Giants went 3-and-out and then the punt
was blocked. This time the Eagles were at the Giants 18 yard line, and three plays
later they had a touchdown and 21-20 lead. Manning did a good job getting down
to the Eagles 10-yard line, and Aldrick Rosas kicked a 28 yard field goal to take
the lead back 23-21 as the half ended. It had been a back and fourth game,
and that continued into the third quarter with the Eagles scoring a field goal
on the opening second half drive. The Giants went three-and-out, and the Eagles
added another touchdown, putting them up 31-23. I had a sinking feeling, but Manning
hit Tavarres King and the 57 yard completion had the Giants trailing by two. Unfortunately,
the two point conversion attempt failed. It mattered big time as the Eagles next
completed their trifecta of special teams blocking, this time preventing what
would have been a 48-yard field goal by Rosas. The Giants, now down by five
instead of three, needed a touchdown to win this game, and Manning had a fourth
down on the Eagles 6-yard line. If I didn't say it before, there were too many
Eagles fans in the stadium today, and they were a noisy bunch. That didn't help
the Giants, and Bobby Hart's false start drew a penalty, moving the Giants back
five more yards. Manning threw a pass to Evan Engram, and it looked like the
Eagles safety held his left arm and he should have been called for pass interference.
That didn't happen, and so the Giants went on to add another loss to this
hopefully forgettable season. Next week the Giants travel to Arizona before finishing
the season at home against the Redskins. Hopefully their fans will be too busy
with other things on New Years eve to show up at the stadium, considering they
are also out of the playoff picture."
"The
Giants lost this one, but I don't think any quarterback could have done better
than Eli Manning in this game working with what he has. He was up against the
second ranked defense in the NFL. Manning completed 37 of his 57 passes for 434
yards, and had three touchdowns and one interception. The numbers would have been
even better, but there were some drops by his receivers. Manning relied heavily
on Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram. He targeted them on 29 passes In this game,
and the offense carried the ball so to speak. It was their defense and special
teams that were a letdown. The quarterback style change from Carson Wentz
to Nick Foles was obvious. He's more of a pocket passer, and there were no sudden
scrambles resulting in first downs. The Eagles didn't ease Foles into the job
on his first start of the season, and there was more passing than I would have
expected. The Eagles special teams unit came to play, and they blocked a punt,
an extra point, and a field goal. That's not going to look good on Giants special
teams coordinator Tom Quinn's resume with the Giants bringing in a new head coach
and general manager. The Giants scored
on their first three possessions and held an early 20-7 lead. That was cut to
23-21 by halftime. The Eagles took
the lead back with a field goal at the start of the third quarter, and quickly
added a touchdown. The Giants matched that with one of their own, and their field
goal attempt to put them back in the lead was blocked. The Eagles added another
field goal and the Giants could have won this game in the end, but lost out to
a possibly bad non-call by the ref in the endzone when Evan Engram was interfered
with. Losing safety Landon Collins in the second quarter didn't help the Giants
in their efforts against the Eagles. Also, linebacker B.J. Goodson re-injured
his ankle in the third quarter, and he did not return. The Giants have been short
handed all season on both offense and defense. They will be off to Arizona next
Sunday to play the Cardinals, who have their own set of problems."
