kicked a 30 yard field goal. "My
Thanksgiving day wish did not come true. I was so happy on Sunday, watching while
the Giants beat the Kansas City Chiefs at MetLife Stadium. It didn't go as well
for them tonight. There was no score at the end of the first quarter, and then
the Giants came up with a nice long drive that included going for it on a 4th-and-1
at the Washington 21 yard line. Orleans Darkwa picked it up with a two yard run.
They got down to the 12 yard line and settled for a 30-yard field goal from Aldrick
Rosas. I was hoping that would hold up, but then with about one minute left,
cornerback Ross Cockrell drew a defensive pass interference call that was good
for 37 yards. It gave the Redskins a 1st-and-10 at the Giants 11 yard line. The
only good news was that the defense was able to keep the Redskins out of the endzone.
They kicked a field goal, and the score was tied at 3-3 at the end of the half.
The Redskins ended up with good field position on their second drive in the
third quarter. They had a 3rd-and-goal at the Giants 15 yard line, and this time
the defense wasn't able to stop them. Kirk Cousins completed a pass to his receiver
Jamison Crowder for a touchdown. Now the Giants were trailing 10-3. After a disappointing
3-and-out, the Redskins took over. They got to about midfield when Cousins was
intercepted by Janoris Jenkins, and he took it all the way back for a touchdown.
The game was tied at 10-10. It stayed that way until about halfway through
the fourth quarter. Jason Pierre-Paul sacked Cousins on a third down, but a defensive
holding penalty on cornerback Ross Cockrell gave the Redskins a new set of downs.
Cousins ended the drive with a touchdown pass to his receiver Josh Doctson. The
Giants had to get points up fast, and they went for a 4th-and-3 from their own
32 yard line. Manning was sacked on the play, and the Redskins added a field goal
to give them a 20-10 lead. Time was running down as the Giants used up all
their timeouts, and when Manning threw an interception that about did it for any
remote chance at a comeback. Tonight,
the Giants scored only three offensive points. The defense scored more points
than the offense. I don't think that's the way it's supposed to work if you want
to win games. We'll have to hope for better when they play the Raiders next week
in Oakland."
"The
Giants weren't able to get much going on offense, and what could have been expected?
They were into their eighth different starting offensive line this season. It
couldn't be prevented because right guard D.J. Fluker came out of Sunday's overtime
win over the Chiefs with a toe injury. Eli Manning had no sacks in that game and
was hit with four today. Helped along by some key drops, Manning completed less
than half of his passes. Sterling Shepard was out for the second game in a
row, so it's become easy for teams to zero in on Evan Engram. Maybe because of
the added pressure he feels, his gameplay has been slipping. Engram dropped two
easy passes, and there was another that he could have had that would have been
a big help. Engram ended up catching 3 passes out of 7 for 18 yards. Engram combined
with fellow tight end Rhett Ellison, wideouts Tavarres King and Roger Lewis, and
the three running backs, totaled just 114 passing yards for the offense. On
defense they were 'Crowdered out' tonight. They should have had someone covering
him. If they did, he simply ignored it, as he caught 7 passes for 141 yards and
1 touchdown. Cornerback Ross Cockrell filled in just fine for Eli Apple on Sunday,
so Ben McAdoo gave him another shot and sat Apple tonight, but things did not
go as well as they did against Kansas City. Cockrell drew two key penalties, let
Crowder beat him for a big play, and he messed up coverage on Josh Doctson who
was wide open for a touchdown pass. The Giants offense had only seven first
downs in the entire game, and the defense had to deal with extra time on the field.
While allowing running back Samaje Perine to gain 100 yards, they managed to sack
Kirk Cousins six times. Overall they limited the Redskins to 20 points, and even
contributed some of their own when Janoris Jenkins intercepted Cousins and ran
it back 53 yards for a touchdown. Since this was a Thursday game, the Giants
will have a little extra time to figure things out. I don't know what they'll
come up with, especially if Shepard is still out. Manning has a weak offensive
line, and is throwing to his running backs and former practice squad receivers.
McAdoo's coaching choice of Cockrell over Apple hurt in this game We'll have to
see what he comes up with next week against the Raiders."
