"The Giants had made some big mistakes last time against the Rams. I was hoping that was behind them, but they started off with another right at the start of this game when Aldrick Rosas kicked the ball out of bounds on the opening kickoff. The 49ers got to start at the 40-yard line on their first play, Carlos Hyde ran the ball 28 yards, and that was capped off by an unnecessary roughness 15-yard penalty on Darian Thompson. I don't know if that play counted for one or two mistakes by the Giants, but I didn't have a good feeling, and the 49ers were already at the Giants 17- yard line. The defense held and the 49ers settled for a field goal and 3-0 lead.
The Giants offense came back with a field goal on each of their drives, and had a 6-3 lead at the end of the quarter. Things looked like they were going our way when the 49ers fumbled the ball near midfield. Eli Manning's pass to Sterling Shepard went for 26 yards, and Wayne Gallman followed that with a 6 yard run to put the Giants on the 49ers 28 yard line. Unfortunately, it was time for another mistake. Manning was hit with a sack, and as he tried to shovel the ball forward, the 49ers recovered. They were down at their end of the field, and after a few plays had a 3rd-and-8 at their 17-yard line. That was the perfect setting for the Giants defense to add to the mistakes, and they allowed an 83 yard touchdown pass!
Manning was able to get a nice drive going, and the Giants took the lead back on a 9 yard touchdown pass to Evan Engram, who seems to catch one each game. The lead quickly disappeared when 49ers rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard had his second big play of the day with 28 seconds left in the half. His 47 yard touchdown pass put the 49ers up 17-13, and that's how the half ended.
Manning started the third quarter off with another nice drive that stalled at the 49er 16-yard line. That's when Rosas made his second mistake, missing on a 34 yard field goal after having made the previous two, which were longer. Then the Giants defense let the 49ers have a few more big plays, and it looked as though they would score until Olivier Vernon tipped the ball and intercepted it. The Giants didn't get far on their turn and punted, and the third quarter ended with the 49ers at the Giants 15-yard line.
They scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, and had a 24-13 lead. The Giants went three-and-out, and the 49ers scored again when their running back Matt Breida broke free for a 33 yard touchdown run. The Giants went three-and-out again, and the 49ers did the same before allowing the Giants to use up the clock as they scored a touchdown and two point conversion. The game ended with the 49ers getting their first win of the season with a 31-21 score over the Giants. The way things are going I don't know if anyone is looking forward to seeing the Kansas City Chiefs next week at MetLife Stadium."

"It's certainly embarrassing to lose to a team with a very poor record, and these two teams were close to the worst, totaling 1 win in 17 games between them. There's not much respect earned in winning either, considering the level of competition, but the 49ers will take it and go off and enjoy their bye week. The Giants, on the other hand, have to wonder how they have managed to get themselves into this mess.
Last week's game was a brutal 51-17 loss to the Rams. Eli Manning had targeted Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram on more than half his passes, and they connected on just 9 of the 19. I expected much better today, and Manning delivered as Shepard and Engram combined for 17 catches on 22 passes. Manning missed on connecting with his other 15 passes only 4 times, and he had two touchdowns and no interceptions. Manning's biggest mistake of the day was fumbling on one of his three sacks, and while that killed any scoring opportunity, it didn't leave his defense with any poor field position.
The Giants defense was the biggest culprit in this loss, and I wasn't expecting that. They had starters, defensive end Olivier Vernon and cornerback Janoris Jenkins, back for this game. The 49ers had CJ Beathard, who had completed only 50.9 percent of his passes, and had thrown two touchdown passes and four interceptions in three starts. The 49ers have a possible franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo, newly acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots. Garoppolo is waiting in the wings as he gets up to speed. So Beathard was once again left to the task of leading a team that had lost every game this season.
The Giants had no sacks against a rookie quarterback who was being labeled the 49ers 'crash test dummy' after he took 16 hits and five sacks in their loss to the Cardinals last week. Give a quarterback time and he'll do damage, and the Giants not only gave Beathard time, they gave him time-and-a-half. The Giants made Beathard look like a star, throwing two touchdowns, and running for another, though he did have one interception on a tipped ball.
There were also his three big passing plays that went for 83, 47, and 40 yards, two of them being touchdowns. Somewhere along the line, I wasn't quite sure if Janoris Jenkins had benched himself. It didn't look like he was playing even though he was out there on the field.
The defense also let the 49ers run on them for 186 total yards. Running backs Carlos Hyde and Matt Breida did most of the damage with 28 and 33 yard runs, with one of them being a touchdown.
The 49er offense had only scored 10 points in each of Beathard's three starts, and they came away with 31 today. So can things get any worse? The Giants have a shot at losing five straight home games next week when they face the Kansas City Chiefs, a much tougher opponent than the one they just lost to."
