lose to the Eagles 27-24. Eli Manning was 35 of 47 for 366 yards with 3 TDs
and 2 INTs. Orleans Darkwa rushed for 22 yards on 7 carries, and caught 1 pass
for 11 yards. Paul Perkins rushed for 22 yards on 9 carries, and caught 2 passes
for 8 yards. Shane Vereen rushed for 5 yards on 1 carry, and caught 2 passes
for 18 yards. Sterling Shepard caught 7 passes for 133 yards and 1 TD. Odell
Beckham Jr. caught 9 passes for 79 yards and 2 TDs. Brandon Marshall caught
8 passes for 66 yards. Evan Engram caught 5 passes for 45 yards. Roger Lewis
caught 1 pass for 6 yards. Landon Collins caused 1 fumble. Eli
Apple had 1 fumble recovery. Olivier Vernon, Devon Kennard, and Jay Bromley
each had 1 sack. Aldrick Rosas
kicked a 41 yard field goal. "The
Giants have not had an easy time with the Eagles over the past few years and today
was no different. There was very little scoring by either team in the first half.
The Eagles came up with a touchdown in the second quarter after a real long drive.
Right after that the Giants had moved into Philly territory, but Eli Manning threw
a deep pass to Brandon Marshall that was intercepted. Aside from killing the drive,
it didn't hurt too much since the Eagles now had it at their own four yard line.
For some reason they went for it on a 4th-and-8. Carson Wentz was sacked and
lost six yards. The Giants got down to the goal line and Manning hit Sterling
Shepard for what looked like a touchdown, but after review, it was just short.
Manning's next pass caught Shepard in the endzone, and even though he caught the
ball and took two steps, it didn't count because he didn't hold onto the ball
after hitting the ground on the sidelines. On fourth down, they tried Orleans
Darkwa up the middle, but he was stopped. So it was a close game going into
halftime and overall the Giants offense looked better so far than they had in
the two previous games. Then it looked as if luck was going our way when the Eagles
missed on a field goal on their first drive in the third quarter, but two plays
later, a pass thrown towards Odell Beckham Jr. was tipped and intercepted. The
Eagles had the ball at about midfield and took a bit of a chance going for it
on a real short 4th-and-1. Quarterback Carson Wentz kept the ball and plowed through
for the first down. That was followed by a 41-yard defensive pass interference
call on Apple and three plays later Wentz threw a touchdown pass. That made it
14-0 in favor of the Eagles and it stayed that way till the end of the quarter. In
the fourth quarter the Giants had good field position and Manning completed a
pass to Darkwa, three in a row to Marshall, and capped it off with a touchdown
pass to Beckham for the Giants first score of the game. After the kick, on the
Eagles first play, Landon Collins caused receiver Zach Ertz to fumble and Eli
Apple grabbed it up. Four plays later, Manning's pass to Beckham tied the score.
On the second play of the Giants next possession Manning connected with Sterling
Shepard who took it all the way for a 77 yard touchdown to put the Giants up 21-14.
I couldn't believe that the Giants had scored three touchdowns in a row on three
possessions after scoring just one over the last two games! Things looked
good, but four plays later the Eagles tied it up with a touchdown. The Giants
went three points up with a field goal and the Eagles matched them with one of
their own. With a tie score, it came down to the Eagles kicking a 61 yard field
goal in the final seconds or overtime. Of course they made it and the Giants lost
the game 27-24. At least the Giants offense showed some life today against a tough
opponent. Maybe they can continue that next week in Tampa Bay."
"Before
I start, there were a few big plays I can't get out of my mind from last week.
The first was Jason Pierre-Paul sacking Matthew Stafford with Devon Kennard recovering
the ball. Then one play later, Eli Manning throwing an interception that gave
the ball right back to Detroit at the Giants 29 yard line. The defense found themselves
suddenly back on the field, and five plays later Matthew Stafford threw a touchdown
pass, putting his team up 14-7. Another was Manning's catchable pass to Brandon
Marshall that he dropped which ultimately resulted in the Giants having to make
a long punt. The special teams coverage had it returned for a touchdown. Those
mistakes accounted for 14 points in the Giants 24-10 loss. Why bring this up?
Make mistakes and you end up losing games, and the Giants lost this one to the
Eagles today. The Eagles made a big one when they decided to go for it on a 4th-and-8
from the Giants 43 yard line and Carson Wentz was sacked by Devon Kennard. The
Giants got down close to the goaline, but couldn't get the ball in, even on a
fourth-and-goal from inside the Eagles 1 yard line. After last week's loss, Ben
Mcadoo suggested there may be drastic changes. What makes me think Ben McAdoo's
idea of a drastic change would be going back to his old hair style before giving
up on the play calling? The Giants failed to score in the third quarter, so
up to then they had been in Eagles territory five times, and came away with no
points. Things changed in the fourth quarter when the Giants put together 3 touchdown
drives to take the lead 21-14. In just 11 plays Manning's 8 passes were all completions
and Orleans Darkwa broke up the middle for 20 yards on one of his runs. The
Eagles kept up and in the final seconds of a game that looked to go into overtime,
rookie kicker Jake Elliott nailed a 61 yard field goal for the Eagles to win this
one 27-24. Overall, Manning got rid of the ball quickly all game to help his
offensive line out with the Eagles pass rush. He completed 35-of-47 passes for
366 yards, with 3 touchdowns and two interceptions, the last one on a tipped ball.
Manning wasn't sacked at all, but the running game still stalled. Darkwa's
20 yard run raised the dismal running total to 49 yards on 17 carries. Run defense
wasn't looking good coming into this game and the backs, mostly LeGarrette Blount
and Wendell Smallwood, helped drive the Eagles total up to 193 yards on 39 carries.
This was a tough one for the Giants to lose especially after that fourth quarter
comeback. They still have a few things to fix before next Sunday's game in Tampa
Bay, including on how a receiver should behave after catching a touchdown pass.
Odell Beckham Jr. was way out of line and his actions hurt his team."
