last week, I didn't know what to expect. It was just one game, but it was so very
disappointing to see the Giants play so poorly, scoring only three points. Tonight
I was hoping to see a big turn around. In the first quarter the Lions scored on
their second drive of the game, but the Giants came right back with a touchdown
of their own to tie the score at 7-7, just as the second quarter started.
When the defense sacked quarterback Matthew Stafford and then recovered the ball,
I thought the Giants would be on their way, but Eli Manning immediately threw
an interception while trying to connect with Evan Engram. The Lions had the ball
at the Giants 29 yard line and our defense found themselves suddenly back on the
field. Five plays later Stafford threw a touchdown pass, putting his team back
up 14-7. On the Giants turn, after an encouraging 11 yard run by Orleans Darkwa,
Eli Manning was sacked on back to back plays, and they faced a third down and
28. Even with the Lions taking a penalty on the next play, the Giants failed to
make a first down and they had to punt. The Lions later scored a field goal which
left the Giants trailing at halftime 17-7. The Giants held a nice halftime ceremony
to honor the 2007 Super Bowl team, but it was hard for the fans to shake thoughts
of how poorly the current team was playing. After the break, both teams went
three and out before Manning put together a drive that had him down at the Detroit
1 yard line. On the first play there was an offensive holding penalty, and on
4th and goal at the Detroit 2, they decided to go for it, but there was a delay
of game penalty so they settled for a field goal to make it a 17-10 one score
game. On the Giants first drive in the fourth quarter, Manning hit Brandon
Marshall with a deep pass which he should have caught and this miss really hurt
them. Failing to move the ball they punted, and Brad Wing's punt was returned
88 yards for a touchdown. With the score now 24-10 no one held much hope that
the Giants would be able to pull this one out, and that became the final score.
Despite the halftime ceremony it was not such a fun day for the fans, and we can
only hope for better next week when they go on to play in Sunday's game with the
Eagles."
"Are
the Giants in competition with the Jets for a frirst round pick -- This
game was played on a Monday night, so the Giants got to see how all their division
counterparts had done on Sunday. It was a loss for the Cowboys and Eagles, and
the Redskins came up with their first win. Those teams all stood at 1-1 and to
keep up with the mix, the Giants needed a win tonight. Unfortunately, that didn't
happen. It didn't inspire them that there were a number of former Giants on hand
for a halftime celebration of Super Bowl 42, or the fact that they had the actual
quarterback from that time sitting right there in their own locker room ready
to play. Instead they picked up where they left off last week in the season
opener. To be fair, right tackle Bobby Hart played hurt in that first game and
despite giving it a go, he wasn't able to play after the first quarter tonight.
Also, Odell Beckham Jr. was out last week, and though he made his first appearance
while still dealing with an ankle injury, his return didn't really open things
up much more for tight end Evan Engram and wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
Those two ended up with the same number of receptions even with a few extra throws,
and also for about the same yardage as in the first game. Even though one of them
by Engram was a touchdown catch, it's sad to say that Engram is the only player
on the team after two full games to have reached the endzone for a score. Marshall
had a big opportunity to help his offense out, but he dropped what should have
been at least a sure 30 yard catch. There was yet another poor showing from
the running game. To date, Orleans Darkwa
has run the ball for better yardage than Paul Perkins on less carries, and maybe
he should get more touches. The down side is that Perkins probably looks to be
the better receiver if a play comes to that. On defense the Giants were missing
two defensive starters, cornerback Janoris Jenkins and linebacker B.J. Goodson.
They gave up 17 points in the first half and then none in the second. The Lions
got their extra seven points from a punt returned for a touchdown. So the Giants
now sit at 0-2. They have the Eagles, a division team coming up next. Anything
can happen over the long course, but it would be hard to take another loss and
think that you could be in the running by the end of this season."
