"Happy New Year! The Giants are in the playoffs. It didn't matter if they won or lost this particular game, but I wanted to see them win. Washington would see their season end if that happened. I have to admit to having some mixed feelings for the Washington fans sitting out there in the stands, as I know how I would feel if things were reversed.
I got past that sooner than I expected watching the Giants play as though this game meant everything to them. They scored a field goal in the first quarter and a touchdown in the second to go up 10 - 0 and I even enjoyed a guilty pleasure when Washington missed on a 57 yard field goal right at the end of the half as that would have made it a one score game.
The Giants defense had 3 sacks in the first half and had held the Redskins to zero points. I guess that factored into Ben McAdoo's decision to go for a 4th-and-2 at the Washington 16 yard line on the Giants opening drive in the 3rd quarter. Eli Manning's pass to Odell Beckham Jr. was incomplete. It sure seemed like a bad choice when Kirk Cousins soon followed up with a long 49 yard completion to Pierre Garcon. Cousins tried for another big play right after that, but this time it was intercepted by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at the Giants 5 yard line.
Unfortunately the Giants went three-and-out, and on his turn, Cousins was at it right away, hitting Vernon Davis with a 31 yard pass. The defense held them on the next three plays and Washington settled for a 32 yard field goal to make it 10-3. After the Giants went three and out for the third time in a row, Washington put together their best drive of the day and they scored a touchdown to tie it up. Nothing happened on the next two possessions, but then the Giants offense woke up when Manning let loose and completed a 44 yard pass to Tavarres King. That got them in field goal range and that's what they got, to make it a 13-10 score.
There wasn't much time left and Cousins got things moving for the Redskins with four straight completions before being intercepted by Rodgers-Cromartie for the second time in the game. I was elated that the Giants were about to close out this game with a win. After timeouts and a punt Washington got the ball one last time near their goal line and Trevin Wade picked up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. The final score was 19-10 after the Giants took a knee on the mandatory extra point attempt with no time left in the game. So that ended the regular season for both teams. Now I'm anxious to see who the Giants will play next week in the wildcard game, but other games have to play out first."

"Who would have thought, as this long season moved along, at the very end the strength of the Giants offense would be with their running game? All year Eli Manning has had his three healthy talented receivers at his disposal, and today he threw for only 180 yards and no touchdowns. The rushing plays produced 161 yards and one touchdown. For that matter, who would have thought that their 32 ranked defense, hurriedly refurbished with free agent players fresh off the shelves, would jell enough, in just one season, to carry this team into the playoffs?
Today the Giants offense scored just 13 points. It makes no sense as to how they have struggled this year in that area. You saw it in preseason and people began to wonder. It was dismissed as just preseason games, there for the starting offense to work things out. But now they've had a whole season of regular season games where nothing changed.
Sooner or later you have to realize the facts. This Giants team can not put points up on the board, and they rely on the defense to do all the heavy lifting. Will that be enough to guide the Giants through the playoffs and into the Super Bowl? You hope so, but there's some pretty tough competition coming up. As we've pointed out before, four of the Giants total five losses this season were to teams who had appeared in the playoffs the year earlier. Four of the five, even with the defense playing as they did, were on the road.
As I write this, two of those teams are still standing, and have moved on to the playoffs once again. The day long mystery is over and the Giants will be at Green Bay when the post season kicks off next weekend, on Sunday in the late afternoon game. Will the Giants defense have to do it all, or can McAdoo, with his new found running offense, be able to call a balanced game that can get points on the board, something that can give Giants' fans hope that their team will move on?"
