Aug 31 Focus now shifts to Eli Manning as it now gets real for Giants. There is a time to develop and plan for the future -- and a time to get down to the serious business of knocking heads with a fierce rival. Daniel Jones is the starting quarterback in waiting for a franchise that for the past 15 years has leaned on one player to guide their offense.

Giants in final process of putting roster together. Like all NFL teams, the Giants have until 4 p.m. to pare their roster to the 53-player regular-season limit. Pat Shurmur wasn't about to offer clues as to what he or anyone else in the organization is thinking.

Aug 29 So much swirling around Daniel Jones is about the waiting game. His ascension into the coveted role of starting quarterback for the Giants is inevitable, but not imminent. With the Giants' front-line players mostly sitting this one out, Jones will make his first preseason start Thursday night against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium and it is fascinating to speculate when his next start arrives.
The Giants more often than not only carried one backup quarterback on the 53-man roster until the last two seasons, when mid-round draft picks were protected. Now, with rookie Daniel Jones nipping at Eli Manning's heels, the Giants must decide if it is worth keeping around Alex Tanney for his veteran insights or 24-year-old Kyle Lauletta to see how he develops.

Aug 28 The odds are stacked against Paul Perkins. He knows it, and rather than run from it, he'd rather run with it and relish the challenge along the way. Thursday night's Giants preseason finale against the Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., might very well represent Perkins' last stand with the team that drafted him in 2016. Or it might not.

Aug 27 This may be Giants' last look at Daniel Jones before team is his. Soon, it will be Eli Manning's time to turn back the clock. To try to make something out of what will likely be his last season in blue. To hold off the team's future for as long as he can.

Aug 26 The Giants are beginning the transition from training camp to the regular season, which is just two weeks away. They returned to the practice field on Sunday to prepare for Thursday's preseason finale and what lies beyond. Daniel Jones will start preseason finale; Eli to sit.

Nine observations on Giants starters.

Aug 22 After playing their first two preseason games at home, the Giants take their first road trip of 2019 this week. They will look to improve to 3-0 on Thursday night against the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. The third preseason game is typically when coaches play their starters the longest before resting them in the fourth.

Aug 21 Special Report - Perhaps Odell Beckham carries some mysterious virus that affects those who cluster near him. This time it's Cleveland Browns' quarterback Baker Mayfield (who hasn't yet had a gold jacket reserved for him in Canton), saying that he was "stunned" that the Giants spent the sixth overall draft pick on quarterback Daniel Jones. "I cannot believe the Giants took him," Mayfield said Tuesday. It blows my mind. "Some people overthink it, that's where they go wrong. They forget you have to win, too."

Aug 20 These are the dog days of training camp. With their first road trip on the horizon, the New York Giants held another tough, physical practice in hot, humid conditions. They have two more practices this week before traveling to Cincinnati to face the Bengals on Thursday night.

Aug 19 Don't play Saquon Barkley. Pat Shurmur should have Barkley take a seat and wait for the regular-season opener against the Cowboys to play him. Barkley is the straw that stirs the Giants' drink. The risk-reward isn't worth taking him out of bubble wrap. Better safe than sorry.

New York Giants 53-man roster projection. With roster decisions looming on August 31, here, then, is an updated prediction on the roster.

Aug 18 Why Pat Shurmur is upbeat about the Giants' defense. Before training camp even started, the question of how the Giants defense would eventually pan out was on the top of everyone's minds. The group is young, with first-round draft picks Dexter Lawrence and DeAndre Baker atop the depth chart.

The Giants did much to please Pat Shurmur in their preseason victory against the Chicago Bears last night. But coaches are wont to focus on errors that need correcting, and that's where Shurmur was after viewing the tape of the 32-13 triumph.

Aug 16 Giants' second preseason game the time for Eli Manning to assert himself. The plan is for him to stay on the field longer than the cameo three-play series he lasted last week against the Jets. Coach Pat Shurmur gave Manning one offensive possession, hoping it would last more than an eye-blink. Instead, Shurmur saw almost nothing.
Expect more snaps from Manning and Jones. Between a quick three-and-out and a 59-minute weather delay, quarterbacks Eli Manning and Daniel Jones didn't see as many snaps as were planned last week. While all four quarterbacks are expected to play again, coach Pat Shurmur hopes to get more than one series each from the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart.

Aug 15 Coaches don't like to reveal playing time before preseason games, but Pat Shurmur clued everyone in on his plan to play all four quarterbacks this week, just like he did in the preseason opener.
You might not see Saquon Barkley at all during the preseason, but when the Giants running back takes the field for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 8, don't be surprised if his role is even much more lethal for opposing defenses.

Why John Mara thinks the Giants are heading in the right direction. No matter what NFL analysts think about the decisions made by Giants general manager Dave Gettleman, one person who is firmly in the 68-year-old general manager's corner is team co-owner John Mara.

Aug 14 Golden Tate will serve four-game suspension after losing appeal. Also, Tate will have $464,705 taken out of his $1.975 million salary he is due in his first season with Big Blue.

John Mara's Giants dream: Daniel Jones 'never sees the field' this season. Clearly, Giants co-owner John Mara is less interested in the delicate dynamic at quarterback and far more concerned with yanking the franchise back toward winning.

Guessing when Giants' Daniel Jones will take Eli Manning's job. Let's allow history to guide the most quintessential 2019 Giants debate: When (or if) first-round pick Daniel Jones will see the field, and how will the franchise end the Eli Manning era.

Aug 13 Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones' NFL career is certainly off to a promising start given his preseason debut last week in which he completed all five pass attempts for 67 yards and 1 touchdown in just one series of play.
Daniel Jones had another impressive day at training camp on Monday, throwing three consecutive touchdown passes, all in different fashion. Of course, we won't know for a while whether Jones has what it takes to be a franchise quarterback.

Aug 12 Eli Manning stomps out talk of competition with strongest practice of training camp. Giants veteran Eli Manning had the type of performance one would expect from a top-tier NFL quarterback on Sunday, his first practice since a three-play outing in the preseason opener against the Jets.
The veteran looked extra sharp, kicking things off with a deep throw to running back Saquon Barkley down the right sideline. He had another pinpoint pass to wide receiver Cody Latimer on the opposite side later in practice. Both were placed perfectly.

T.J. Jones understands the importance of making a first impression. So when he went out in the Giants' preseason opener against the Jets on Thursday night and caught all six of his targets for 72 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle Lauletta, Jones kicked off his career in New York on the right foot.

Aug 11 Despite all the attention being paid to Daniel Jones, which is warranted given his importance to the team's long-term future, the biggest 2019 issue that will go a long way to determining how many games the Giants win and lose is their pass defense.

Lifelong Giants fan making surprise case for final roster spot. Effort combined with instinct and good fortune made Jake Carlock a breakout player in the Giants' 31-22 preseason-opening victory over the Jets.

Aug 10 Daniel Jones showed up as The Natural in his preseason debut, and the unmistakable rumble of his thundering footsteps cannot possibly go in one of Eli Manning's ears and out the other. No one is calling Daniel Jones a draft-day reach anymore, only a precocious rookie reaching for Manning's beloved job.

How LB Nate Stupar is 'selflessly' helping change Giants' culture. Stupar, an eight-year NFL veteran who is entering his second season with the Giants after being claimed off waivers six days before the 2018 season opener, says the difference between the vibe around Quest Diagnostics Training Center this spring and summer is night and day from last season.

against the Jets.
Although it's just Week 1 and the projected starters are unlikely to play or may only see the field for a series or two, there's still plenty to watch come Thursday night.

Aug 7 The Giants and Jets square off Thursday in their 51st annual intra-state rivalry game at their shared home MetLife Stadium. The game traditionally is held in Week 3 of the preseason but has been moved to the opener for both teams in 2019. Why?

Pat Shurmur didn't want to disclose who will play or start in the Giants' preseason opener Thursday night, but he did make an exception regarding Daniel Jones. "He's a guy that will play," Shurmur said. "I can tell you that for sure."

Aug 6 Giants release first unofficial depth chart. To no surprise, rookie Daniel Jones is listed as the No. 2 quarterback behind Eli Manning.

In the months leading up to the NFL Draft, quarterback Daniel Jones was criticized again and again by analysts and anonymous NFL personnel for his inferior arm strength. After 16 practices in the spring and two weeks of training camp, Jones' live arm is making the Giants look smart for trusting their own evaluation.

Aug 5 Boom-or-bust case of Giants LB Alec Ogletree: Playmaker for pass defense? Or liability? Because Ogletree is paid like one of the NFL's best, the young Giants defense needs Ogletree to perform like it. That means playing all three downs, including in the nickel formation on passing downs.

Aug 4 The Giants completed their ninth practice in 10 days at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center before a day off on Sunday. It was all about the young cornerbacks and it started with sixth round pick Corey Ballentine.
This has been a strong start to camp for Ballentine, who makes at least one or two impressive plays per practice and seems to be improving as the summer progresses.

Giants guard Will Hernandez is "heartbroken" for the city he called home in college. Twenty people are dead and 26 more injured, according to the governor of Texas, after a shooter opened fire Saturday morning in an El Paso shopping center.

Aug 3 Another day, another high completion percentage from Eli Manning. Manning's strong first two weeks of training camp continued Friday as he completed 10-of-12 passes and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to trusty tight end Rhett Ellison during the three 11-on-11 periods of practice.
The players were outside and back in full pads for the eighth practice of training camp. It was a more abbreviated practice with a number of players not working with the rest of the team. Every once in a while, even in practice with no tackling, Saquon Barkley reminds everyone why he is special.

Aug 2 This is the time of the year where position and roster battles reach a boiling point across the NFL. There was supposed to be a number of position battles at Giants training camp, though not all of them have quite materialized.
Practice seven of training camp took place at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Thursday. After a spirited practice on Wednesday, Pat Shurmur had the players in shells instead of full pads. It was still an eventful and energetic practice with temperatures in the 80s.

Aug 1 New-look secondary coming together at camp. Everett Withers is in his first season as the Giants' defensive backs coach. Withers' group includes two high-profile offseason acquisitions who start at safety in Jabrill Peppers and Antoine Bethea (a 14-year veteran) and three cornerbacks selected in the NFL Draft: DeAndre Baker in the first round, Julian Love in the fourth and Corey Ballentine in the sixth.

July 31 The Giants' offensive line has been both a weakness of the team and crutch for staunch defenders of Eli Manning, but the veteran quarterback and head coach Pat Shurmur are confident this year's group won't share the struggles of their predecessors.

It never rained at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Tuesday, but there was lightning in the vicinity of the practice field, making it unsafe for anyone to be outside. Practice was moved inside where the team held its fifth practice, the third in full pads.

July 30 The impact of having Nate Solder and Mike Remmers on the field together as the starting offensive tackles is obvious even to the untrained eye. Both players missed the spring OTA sessions and minicamp due to injury, and it is good to see both on the field and moving well.

Eli Manning hit hard by ex-Giants' deaths. Finely tuned preparation, ensuring he can anticipate what to expect before it happens is the hallmark of Eli Manning's NFL existence. Yet when an untimely death hit his radar and pierced his heart, Manning could not consult his notes to guide him. He leaned on his innermost feelings, traveled to Edgewood, Ky., on July 10 and attended the memorial service of former teammate Jared Lorenzen.

July 29 Golden Tate's four-game PED suspension, which the Giants' veteran wide receiver is appealing, means that position coach Tyke Tolbert and the rest of the staff have to balance getting Tate's replacements up to speed in the offense vs. continuing to develop Tate's chemistry with quarterback Eli Manning.

Golden Tate suspension gives Giants another easy excuse to make for Eli Manning - if they want it The Giants could be forced to start wide receivers Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler and Russell Shepard in Week 1.

It's very possible no Giants rookie ever began his NFL career under more trying circumstances than Corey Ballentine. The young man from Washburn University in Kansas plummeted from the euphoria of being selected by the Giants in the sixth round of the NFL Draft to the despair of a tragic and inexplicable shooting hours later in which his best friend was killed and he was wounded.

July 28 Wide receiver Golden Tate is facing a four-game NFL suspension for violation of the league's performance enhancing drug policy. But he says he's innocent. The violation, he says, came from a fertility drug.
The news about Tate came on the heels of a tough stretch for the wide receiver room, which lost Coleman to a torn ACL. Sterling Shepard (thumb) and rookie fifth-round draft pick Darius Slayton (hamstring) have also been sidelined. The Giants add two receivers, and placed Corey Coleman on Injured Reserve.

Former Giants
Victor Cruz again angling for return amid Giants catastrophe. As the Giants continue to lose wide receivers in the opening days of training camp, a former fan favorite once again says he's ready to dance his way back to the Meadowlands.

July 27 Giants general manager Dave Gettleman isn't going to take stock of Daniel Jones' performance every day in training camp. Media and diehard fans will do it for him.
There was pressure on the quarterbacks throughout practice, including appearances in the backfield from Oshane Ximines, Dexter Lawrence, and Carter.
Both Eli Manning and Daniel Jones had sharp practices. Manning's best pass of the day was a deep ball to Golden Tate. Grant Haley came up with a pick on a pass intended for Russell Shepard that bounced off the receiver. Shepard later made a gorgeous catch on a deep post thrown by Jones.

July 26 The first full-squad practice of training camp proved that Giants fans have high expectations for Saquon Barkley. Each time Barkley touched the ball early in practice, the enthusiastic crowd at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center chanted, "MVP, MVP."

The Giants lost the services of one of their starting receivers and top players on Thursday, as Sterling Shepard suffered a fractured thumb in the first practice of training camp. He will be out of action for at least two weeks then evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

Jabrill Peppers hopes to change how people talk about the Odell Beckham Jr. trade. there is one player at Giants training camp this summer who would like to alter the perceptions of that deal, not to mention how it is referred to. A certain safety who, the Giants said at the time, was the key piece in completing the agreement with the Browns.

July 25 How Eli Manning is coping with his Giants QB days being numbered. There will never be another Eli Manning around these parts, though his replacement is here, waiting in the wings. There are not many firsts for someone on the scene as long as Manning, but what he is set to confront this summer is entirely new for him and his team. Daniel Jones will replace Manning. It is only a matter of when.

Eli Manning became the first player in the soon-to-be 95-season history of the Giants to report for a 16th training camp. Hall of Famers Mel Hein and Michael Strahan and former quarterback Phil Simms are the only other Giants to play 15 seasons. Manning has played a franchise-record 232 regular-season games. Strahan is second with 216, a full season behind Manning.

July 24 Coach Pat Shurmur has already declared that Manning is the starter. That means there isn't any real quarterback competition this summer, even though rookie Daniel Jones will be breathing down Manning's neck. Still, all Manning has to do is win games. That will keep him on the field. As long as the Giants are realistically alive for the playoffs, he'll be their quarterback.

Former Giants
Odell Beckham Jr. - There seems to be resentment inside the mind of Beckham over the way he was treated by the Giants, the New York media and the team's fan base.

July 23 Daniel Jones will not miss any time on the field at the start of his first NFL training camp. Jones signed his first NFL contract Monday night, assuring he will practice Tuesday morning with the other rookies at the Giants training facility. The rookies practice for two days before Thursday's first full-scale session with the veterans.

July 22 Dave Gettleman doesn't only need to be right about Daniel Jones. He needs to be right about Pat Shurmur. Because Jones' development will be in Shurmur's hands now. The passing of the torch from Eli Manning -- when and why -- will be determined by Shurmur. Shurmur was deemed to be the right man at the right time to squeeze whatever was left out of Manning's right arm and simultaneously groom his successor one day.

July 21 The Giants defense is going to be a young one in 2019. A very young one. Depending on the percentage of snaps rookie edge rusher Oshane Ximines players, there's a chance that defensive coordinator James Bettcher could start a rookie at every level (nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, Ximines, cornerback DeAndre Baker).

NFC East News

July 19 Six reasons Giants will return to playoffs. Are you really doubting 'elite' Eli Manning again? Eli Manning is a two-time Super Bowl MVP, but does he have one last run in him entering his contract year?

July 18 This isn't 2004, and it isn't 2017, and it won't be Ben McAdoo deciding to take a look at Geno Smith at the end of a Giants nightmare of a season. This is 2019, and a reeling franchise has put Eli Manning on notice by finally launching a succession plan that will usher in the Daniel Jones Era, sooner rather than later if Manning doesn't remember how to win football games. Welcome to Eli's Last Stand.

July 17 For the first time in 15 years, the Giants drafted a quarterback in the first round. The presence of Daniel Jones makes this one of the most intriguing story lines in the league, simply because of the debate and the uncertainty of how things will play out.
The Giants have the third easiest schedule in the NFC East and the fifth-easiest in the NFL. However, in the first half alone, the Giants face the defending division champion Dallas Cowboys and Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

July 16 Giants need Saquon Barkley to be what Odell Beckham was not. Gettleman gave up on the tantalizing vision of Beckham and Barkley terrorizing defenses together for years, gave up on Beckham because he was not his idea of a Stepford Giant.

Former Giants
Phil Simms still thinks he had more wins in the tank when the Giants dumped him before the 1994 season. He doesn't think they will make the same mistake with Eli Manning.

July 15 A way-too-early prediction for Giants' 2019 season: Is this the change Big Blue needed? With stars gone, Giants will have a new look heading into the new season.

July 14 Last year, mainly due to injuries, eight different players returned at least one kickoff and six returned at least one punt. Corey Coleman wound up finishing the season with the most kickoff returns (23) and Jawill Davis with the most punt returns (12). Coleman is still on the team but the Giants parted ways with Davis in May.

July 10 The Giants' offense is now Saquon Barkley's. Star power is alive and well in blue with Saquon Barkley in the fold. The guy is too good to be true, with no missteps on or off the field.
Last season, Barkley led the league in total yards from scrimmage, was second among running backs in receiving yards, while playing behind the NFL's No. 23 ranked offensive line.

July 6 One of the biggest deficiencies of the Giants offense last season was in the red zone, which was a proverbial stop sign for quarterback Eli Manning and Co. The Giants produced touchdowns on just 50 percent of trips inside the 20-yard line in 2018, which ranked No. 28 in the NFL. However, one of the few bright spots for the Giants red-zone offense was tight end Evan Engram.

NFC East News
Ranking how NFC East teams are set up for future at offensive line.

July 5 There is no way to replace the game-breaking threat Beckham brought to the field every time he stepped on it. In many ways, Evan Engram must fill some of that void. He presents more of a matchup problem to opposing defenses than any of the wide receivers.

July 4 Giants training camp opens for rookies and select veterans on July 22, and will offer plenty of opportunity for players near the bottom of the roster to carve out roles for the upcoming season. General manager Dave Gettleman's second offseason saw plenty of turnover in the starting lineup, with potentially 11 new starters and even more turnover lower on the depth chart.

Former Giants
Jared Lorenzen was admitted to the hospital over the weekend and underwent dialysis after falling ill with an infection that affected his kidney and heart. But, after doctors tried to save his life, Lorenzen succumbed to to his ailments and passed away Wednesday.

Jared Lorenzen's role in getting Eli Manning ready for the biggest play of his own career should be remembered, and appreciated.

July 3 During this spring's OTA and minicamp practices, first-round draft pick, No. 17 overall, rookie Dexter Lawrence took the vast majority of first-team snaps. The Giants are counting on him to not only plug the middle against the run but also give an anemic pass rush a boost.

Which NFC East rival poses the biggest threat to the Giants winning the division? Even though the Cowboys will be formidable in their title defense, the Giants have proven they can beat Dallas, either at home or on the road. The Eagles are a different story.

July 1 Wide receiver Sterling Shepard, fresh off signing a long-term contract extension, is in line for an expanded role in 2019 and could be on the cusp of a career-season, following this spring's trade of Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.

Which 2019 opponent will be tougher than people think? There are a lot of good candidates for this since the Giants play against so many teams with young quarterbacks, who always have a chance to take a jump and elevate their teams.

June 30 Eli Manning says Giants' offense can be better, even without Odell Beckham. Manning acknowledged that Beckham is tough to replace, but he said Saquon Barkley may have an even more productive second season, and the Giants' receiving corps remains strong.

June 29 Special Report - There must be times when Giants' general manager Dave Gettleman would like to pick up one of the voluminous scouting books from his desk and toss it out the window. He is constantly riddled by doubt and uncertainty, not to mention criticism.
Who to release? Who to sign? How much to offer on a new contract? Will another team embark on a raiding mission and snatch away one of the players he is counting on? Will he spend too much to keep that player? Did he do the right thing in the draft?
Was he correct in assuming the seven-year veteran with an existing injury can still play and will be of help to the Giants? The 68-year-old native of Boston, despite all his accomplishments and achievements in a 34-year NFL career, is often criticized and questioned for not only his decisions but the abrupt manner in which he makes them.

Eli Manning is trusting what he has been told, not what he might have heard through interpretation. The Giants told Manning he is their starting quarterback to open the 2019 season, and so Manning is not looking at this summer as an audition to keep the job he first claimed midway through the 2004 season.

Look no further than the failures of high draft picks (Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg and, far more heinously, the one and only Ereck Flowers) to reveal the main reason why Eli Manning was under such duress the past few years.

June 25 Odell Beckham Jr. was targeted an average of 10.5 times a game in his 59 games with the Giants, and those throws must get divided up elsewhere. Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate and tight end Evan Engram figure to command the bulk of the attention when Eli Manning is scanning the field.

June 22 After years of cycling through offensive line combinations and looking for cheap answers, the Giants have one of the best tandems of starting guards in the NFL. Pro Football Focus ranked the Will Hernandez-Kevin Zeitler pairing No. 5 before they take a regular-season snap together.

June 18 Note to Giants: No need to change the uniforms. The most radical changes came during their 'nomad' years of the 1970's when they changed the logo on their helmet from a new version of the "NY" to "GIANTS" and that was to accommodate the team's move from New York to New Jersey. They changed back to the original "NY" used in the 50s, 60s and early 70s in 2000.

Daniel Jones didn't have to throw a pass before being welcomed to The Bronx. The Giants' first-round pick out of Duke attended Monday night's Yankees game against the Rays, and received boos when he was shown on the jumbotron at the Stadium in between innings.

Jon Halapio has worked his way back after suffering a fractured ankle last season. The 27-year-old got hurt in the Giants' Week 2 loss to the Cowboys, missing the rest of the season.

June 16 Of the four quarterbacks on the Giants' roster, Kyle Lauletta and Alex Tanney are the other guys in a room dominated by Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones. If Jones can convince the coaching staff he is ready to play whenever called upon, Shurmur might opt to save a roster spot for another position and go with just two quarterbacks.

Hakeem Nicks said Eli Manning's support helped push him to participate in the XFL's "Summer Showcase" event at Montclair State University on Friday, working out for his old offensive coordinator, XFL New York/New Jersey head coach Kevin Gilbride, and his staff in an attempt to make an unexpected return to professional football.

June 14 The Giants have a long way to go before unveiling their 2019 53-man roster. Numerous factors will go into the team's makeup such as injuries, performance, and players currently on other rosters who might become available and present an upgrade over what the Giants have at a specific spot. But if the 53-man roster were to be unveiled tomorrow, here, based on what was observed during the spring practices, is a very early look at who's in and who's out.
General manager Dave Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur taught Giants players, fans and media an important lesson last summer. The practice depth chart isn't necessarily indicative of roster standing. When the Giants cut from 90 to 53 players, the Giants cut a handful second-teamers and kept a handful of third-teamers. They put in more preseason waiver claims than any other NFL team. Here is how NJ Advance Media sizes up all 90 players right now.

June 13 Pat Shurmur gives Giants high marks for OTA attendance. There were a few excused absences. An occasional player not being present. But otherwise, the Giants had near-perfect attendance for their voluntary organized team activities this spring, a departure from recent years, when players such as Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon were no-shows.

Raiders to be featured on Hard Knocks, Were Giants ever serious candidate? There are three acceptable excuses to decline Hard Knocks: A first-year head coach, an appearance on the show within the last 10 years or a playoff appearance within the last two years. The Raiders were one of five teams who could not decline Hard Knocks. The Giants, Redskins, 49ers and Lions were the others.

June 12 The Giants did not embrace Eli Manning only to shove him to the side just because a shiny, new quarterback shares a room at the office with the franchise icon.
Manning, 38, obviously has a huge edge in experience but whenever this is brought up, Shurmur lauds the way Jones, 23, is picking up the offense in his new NFL surroundings.

The next time the Giants take the field will be training camp next month, but battle lines for competitions for jobs and coveted spots near the top of the depth chart have already been drawn.

June 11 Giants players were back at it again on Monday for their seventh OTA. Constant rain forced practice inside the fieldhouse for the first practice in the final week of the offseason program.
The team has three more practices and then it's summer break for the players until the start of training camp at the end of July. Here are the players who stood out at OTA No. 7.

Scouting reports on 3 new Giants from teammate who knows them best - Markus Golden, Antoine Bethea, Olsen Pierre. the Giants have their own reunion going on around defensive coordinator James Bettcher, who was with the Cardinals from 2013-17 and called plays for his final three seasons.

June 10 Corey Coleman finds comfort again in quest to confidently show how good he can be. Humbled and hungry, having turned the page on three seasons of growing pains and potential, Coleman is poised to write a new chapter, and the Giants' hope it will be his best yet.

June 9 The Giants punted on a winning season and potential playoff berth by benching Kurt Warner and inserting rookie Eli Manning in 2004. Twitter, if it had existed then, might have imploded, especially if anyone knew how much Warner had another Super Bowl run in the tank.

June 8 Was hiring general manager Dave Gettleman the biggest mistake the New York Giants organization has made in the past decade?

The Giants will head back to the practice field Monday to begin their final stretch of spring workouts. 5 takeaways from minicamp, including what we've seen from rookie Daniel Jones.

No meaningful partnership is forged overnight. The bonding takes time, patience, and often, a fair share of agita. Just ask Giants offensive linemen Will Hernandez and Nate Solder.

June 7 Giants mandatory minicamp concluded with a third practice at the Quest Diagnostic Training Center on Thursday. It was humid and hotter than the first two days of work, with the sun out for much of practice. It was the shortest of the three practices, with the players departing this afternoon for a three-day weekend before returning next week for their final four OTAs.

Don't tell Pat Shurmur the Giants are rebuilding. Expectations haven't been this low for the Giants in a long time. General manager Dave Gettleman won't use the "R" word, but c'mon, he has been rebuilding on the fly. Shurmur will have to make the gut-wrenching changing of the guard from Manning to Jones. As fond as he is of Manning, he knows he can not afford to let sentiment for a two-time Super Bowl MVP get in the way.

Lorenzo Carter has a leg up on the rest of the Giants' pass-rushers. Or maybe it's two arms up. Unlike speed, strength and technique, the length of Carter's arms is an asset that cannot be improved through coaching, weight-lifting or practice. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Carter's arms measured 34 inches long with a wingspan of 82 inches at the 2018 NFL Combine.

Most of the Giants wide receivers don't know yet what rookie cornerback DeAndre Baker can do. But Darius Slayton knows. He lived it during two Georgia-Auburn matchups in the SEC. Baker is a physical bump-and-run cornerback who has been forced to play soft coverage off the line of scrimmage to start his NFL career because of the rules prohibiting contact in Organized Team Activities and minicamp.

June 6 Eli Manning believes experience will benefit the Giants' offense this year, and it has nothing to do with his 16 years wearing the team's uniform. The greater significance in Manning's opinion is that he and his teammates are in their second season operating coach Pat Shurmur's offense. He believes that will result in greater understanding, efficiency and production.

There is a difference between what should be done and what can be done. James Bettcher, in his debut as defensive coordinator with the Giants last season, was unable to properly imprint the defense in his image. Anyone familiar with his work in Arizona knows it,
Lorenzo Carter wants to be the answer to the Giants' pass rush question, and if he is that, the second-year pro from Georgia would immediately catapult himself into the conversation of the most influential players that could help Big Blue surprise and become playoff contenders quicker than anticipated.
The Giants replaced five defensive starters in the offseason and got younger both in front of and behind Ogletree. The defensive line will start three high picks from each of the last three drafts, and the secondary will feature five players from the last two drafts, with 23-year-old safety Jabrill Peppers being called a leader.

June 5 The first mandatory minicamp practice is in the books, with more to come on Wednesday and Thursday. As with the previous OTAs, no contact is allowed with the players in helmets, jerseys and shorts. It was a big day for the defense getting its hands on the ball.

On a sun-splashed morning, cool and crisp, Daniel Jones took the ball, reached back to fake a handoff and then rolled to his right, where there were no defenders to prevent him from putting on a display the Giants have not seen out of one of their quarterbacks since ... Jeff Hostetler? Jones kept the ball, planted his foot into the grass and took off.

While every move made by quarterback Daniel Jones as he backs up Eli Manning is being scrutinized, defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence and cornerback DeAndre Baker lined up with the starting defense during 11-on-11 reps in Monday's first practice of mandatory minicamp.

June 4 Special Report - When the Giants drafted cornerback Sam Beal in the third round of the Supplemental Draft last summer, he was 6-1 and 177. The kid from Western Michigan was spoken of as an under-the-radar star, and at least two scouts privately criticized the teams for which they work for not having taken him earlier.
So what happened? Did he become an instant star? Nope, in his first rookie practice he suffered an injury to his shoulder, tried to play through it for a week and finally was told that he needed surgery to repair the damage and that 2018 was going to be simply a learning experience while he healed. Well, guess what? He healed, he has put on weight (he's now 6-1 and 190, and is being projected as a starter.

June 3 All quiet on the Giants front as Big Blue set for 3-day minicamp. June is here, all is quiet, and that is how the Giants want it. This was Gettleman's primary objective in jettisoning outspoken personalities such as Beckham, Landon Collins and Olivier Vernon, after all: to eliminate so-called distractions and keep the focus on the field.

June 2 Golden Tate is playing with his fourth different Super Bowl quarterback. Tate and Eli Manning both are experts in adjusting to new faces. Over Manning's 16 year-career, the face of his receiving corps has changed probably too quickly: From Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer in the early years, to Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz in the middle years, to Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard of late.

June 1 General manager Dave Gettleman made it clear when he took over at the end of the 2017 season that he would look to build the franchise through the trenches. In a little over a year, Gettleman has overhauled the entire offensive line.

May 31 The Giants intend to start Eli Manning, despite growing sentiment around the league that Manning at this stage is a fringe starting quarterback in the NFL. NBC Sports' Chris Simms has a far less favorable view of Manning, entering the 2019 regular season. Simms ranks Manning below 31 of 32 starting quarterbacks and one backup, listing the Giants' signal caller No. 34 in his preseason rankings.

May 30 Giants defensive secondary takes the lead. If the Giants have any lingering concerns about their newly revamped safety position, the last several practices have begun to eradicate those quickly.

Golden Tate is undisputed best in NFL at this important skill and it could change look of Giants' offense. The Giants' biggest free-agent addition this offseason has led the NFL in forced missed tackles in five of the last six seasons and finished second in the other.

May 29 What Daniel Jones is learning with eyes glued on Eli Manning. "I think you can learn a lot from him on the field, obviously, from a scheme standpoint, he's done it for a long time, he knows that stuff," the rookie quarterback said Tuesday after organized team activity practice No. 4, out on the grass and in the rain.

Kyle Lauletta recognizes the burdened look on the face of NFL rookies when trying to learn everything in May. Lauletta tried to hide it during Organized Team Activities last year, when he was the hyped rookie quarterback catching up to speed with teammates who had months - or, in most cases, years - worth of a head start.

The Giants offensive line surrendered 78 sacks over the last two seasons and was ranked No. 23 in the league by Pro Football Focus in 2018. To put it mildly, there wasn't anywhere to go but up. However, the Giants enter this season with plenty of optimism about a line that was fortified this offseason by the acquisition of veteran right guard Kevin Zeitler and right tackle Mike Remmers.

Giants only hope this is where Corey Ballentine heals from heartbreak. For Eli Manning, for Daniel Jones, for Saquon Barkley, for every other New York Giant, this was another football day in May, another OTA. For the kid wearing Ballentine in white letters above 25 on his blue jersey, this was much more.

May 26 The Giants as a team refrained from roughing up opposing quarterbacks in 2018 more blatantly than every team in the NFL, other than the Raiders. This is why Markus Golden is here. Not long ago, Golden was a rising star with the Cardinals - amassing 12.5 sacks in 2016, tied for third in the league.

May 25 Brian Baldinger, the former NFL offensive lineman who now makes his living as an analyst breaking down tape for the NFL Network, believes the New York Giants made the right choice in this year's draft by selecting Duke quarterback Daniel Jones.

May 24 With one week of Organized Team Activities complete, the Giants have 10 more practices to go (including three in mandatory minicamp) before breaking for the summer in mid-June. They are back on the practice field Tuesday.
Giants rookie cornerback Corey Ballentine took another step forward in his recovery from a gun shot wound by participating in Thursday's OTA (organized team activity) practice in East Rutherford.

In C.J. Conrad, did the Giants find the next Jason Witten? University of Kentucky tight ends coach Vince Marrow Marrow said that "for sure" Conrad should have heard his name called somewhere in the first five rounds of the 2019 NFL Draft.

May 23 Can't fool Eli Manning twice: Giants Sure, Manning is excited about the veteran group the Giants assembled with two new projected starters on the right side, but he and Giants co-owner John Mara were excited about last year's overhauled offensive line, too. Then the right side failed Manning, center Jon Halapio missed most of the season after leg surgery and the Giants scrambled to plug three holes from the NFL waiver wire. Manning took a career-high 47 sacks.

May 22 The Giants missed the playoffs in 17 consecutive seasons (1964-80) before ushering in big changes and a glorious run of five Super Bowl appearances and four championships from 1986-2011. In the seven seasons since, however, the Giants have played in one playoff game: A 38-13 wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The pattern is established. Dave Gettleman becomes the boss. There is little communication between boss and established veterans. Established veterans become cast-offs. It happened in Carolina, where cogs like DeAngelo Williams, Steve Smith and Josh Norman were let go.

May 21 Eli Manning is a cool customer regarding one of the hot topics of the Giants' spring. Since the team selected quarterback Daniel Jones - the player who will likely one day succeed him, will the 16-year veteran be a willing mentor to the rookie who turns 22 a week from today?

Sam Beal, the second-year cornerback who was selected by the Giants with a third-round supplemental pick last spring and then suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in his first practice with the team, was back on the field for the opening OTA practice on Monday.

May 20 Giants' revamped offensive line is Eli Manning's last hope. No one can accuse the Giants and their general manager, Dave Gettleman, of accepting the status quo with their offensive line.
There are three Giants a certain offensive-line guru finds intriguing, believing they have the potential to anchor the position group for years to come. They are Will Hernandez, Jon Halapio and, yes, Chad Wheeler, youngsters believed to possess greater upside than the elders on the line.

May 18 Special Report - The Giants have added another draftee to the list of players signed, when they reached agreement with cornerback Corey Ballentine, a sixth-round pick from Division II Washburn in Topeka, Kan. Ballentine, of course, is the unfortunate kid whose day of glory was cut short by a gunshot at 12:46 a.m. April 27 - hours after he was drafted.

May 17 Giants receiver coach preparing for life without Odell Beckham Jr. No one has any proof how much the Giants will miss Odell Beckham Jr. on the field. Anyone wishing to downplay his absence can point to the production (scoring 40, 0, 27 and 35 points) while Beckham missed the final four games last season as evidence the Giants can move the ball and score without his dynamism.

Tiki Barber: Giants trading Odell Beckham was the right thing. "I think Odell wanted to go and [general manager] Dave Gettleman and the New York Giants acquiesced." Barber said.

May 16 Minimized by all the hyperbole and consternation surrounding the offseason trade between the Giants and the Browns has been the significance of the addition of safety Jabrill Peppers to the Giants' secondary.

Cornerback DeAndre Baker is poised to make an immediate impact, and the Giants wanted him enough to trade a package of draft picks to move back into the first round so they could select him with the 30th overall pick.

May 15 After the Giants traded wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns this spring, Barkley is now the face of the Giants' offense and New York's most dangerous weapon.

May 14 Did Dave Gettleman finally fix the Giants' offensive line? Right tackle Mike Remmers' free agent signing this weekend completed a Gettleman do-over that the Giants hope will protect Eli Manning in 2019.

May 12 Giants have high hopes for Golden Tate | Redundancy or unpredictability with Sterling Shepard? the Giants' staff believes that Tate's playmaking ability after the catch combined with the fact that he and Shepard can easily be moved around will keep opposing defenses guessing.

May 11 Most teams that draft a quarterback with a top-10 pick can't wait to get that passer on the field to maximize the value of their rookie deal, but the Giants don't operate like most teams.

The New York Giants added depth to their ground game this week by signing running back Rod Smith, whose addition led to the surprising release of Robert Martin.

May 10 Suddenly Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins is the last of the Mohicans. Gone are strong veteran presences on the Giants' defense such as safety and former captain Landon Collins, EDGE rusher Olivier Vernon and known commodities like cornerback Eli Apple.

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Shula believes Daniel Jones is capable enough to start Week 1 if the Giants asked that of him.

May 8 Eli Manning came into the league in 2004 with an arm that elicited raves from talent evaluators. Jones is more of a technician, and a better athlete overall than Manning. Odell Beckham Jr.'s No. 13 Giants jersey was a top NFL seller for years. He is a transcendent talent and was this franchise's best player for five seasons. So how much does it mean to Monmouth undrafted free agent receiver Reggie White Jr. to wear No. 13 at Giants rookie minicamp? Surprisingly, no more than any other number.

But at one point during his press conference, Shurmur at times seemed extra careful when he spoke about the tragic shooting that injured draft pick Corey Ballentine and claimed the life of Ballentine's teammate and friend, Dwane Simmons.

Daniel Jones, the outstanding quarterback from Duke selected by the Giants with the sixth overall selection in the NFL Draft last week, today endured that unique rite of passage every high-profile athlete here faces: his first New York-area news conference.
Rookie minicamp is underway with three days of practice on the itinerary. Before Friday's practice, the rookies met the media inside the fieldhouse. Here is what we learned.

Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones must have felt like he was back at Duke during the first half of Friday's Giants minicamp practice. After all, it didn't seem like any of the drafted wide receivers, undrafted free agents or try out players had any realistic chance of making a catch, contested or otherwise.
Daniel Jones' first passes in a Giants uniform are in the book. It was in a practice jersey in a rookie minicamp throwing to a group that included undrafted free agents, but it was a start nonetheless for the No. 6-overall pick just a week after he was drafted.

Apr 19 When it comes to the all-important quarterback position, the story hasn't changed as far as Giants general manager Dave Gettleman is concerned. The Giants have been carefully investigating how the quarterbacks on their draft board have dealt with past adversities. Gettleman also mentioned the importance of having a quarterback who is mentally mature to handle the pressures that come with playing in the New York media market.

Saquon Barkley understands that some still hold to the belief that the New York Giants should have selected a quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft instead of him. The Giants began their voluntary offseason conditioning program, and after a team meeting and the initial workout, Manning spoke publicly for the first time in what has been a momentous offseason. Apr 13 Wide receiver Sterling Shepard recently agreed to a four-year, $41 million extension and is the longest-tenured wideout on the team's roster.
Shepard intends to contribute beyond just catching passes. He believes his status as the receiver with the longest stint in Giants blue places him in a natural leadership position.

Is he still a viable Eli Manning replacement?

Apr 6 Special Report - A while ago, someone asked how pro football has changed over the countless seasons I have been a professional observer. It was an unanswerable question. There have been too many changes - physically, emotionally, intellectually - to even arrive at a few.

Rather than dwell on what went out the door, Engram will enter a season for the first time without calling Beckham a teammate and is viewing this as a chance to jump-start his NFL ascension.

Apr 3 After an offseason of questionable decisions, the Giants have a chance to end on a high note by landing Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen in a trade. Here's why Rosen is worth what it will cost (second rounder?) in a potential bidding war between now and the 2019 NFL Draft.

Mar 30 Saquon Barkley bothered by Eli Manning flak: 'It's not his fault'. Saquon Barkley isn't here for the continued criticism of Eli Manning.

Mar 28 The Giants don't necessarily have to address their need for Eli Manning's successor via the NFL draft. They are among three teams "very interested" in trading for Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen, at least according to former college quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt.

The NFL's new rule changes: Expanded replay and no more blindside blocks

Mar 27 The Giants are planning to investigate every possible option when it comes to finding their Quarterback of the Future, and that includes a potential trade for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen

Mar 26 John Mara explains why Giants' plan makes perfect sense. "It doesn't matter if Eli is going to be around [after this season] or not," Mara, the team's co-owner, said at the NFL Annual League Meeting.

Former NFL quarterback and New Jersey native Chris Simms has a theory Beckham's presence "exposed" Manning's quarterback weaknesses and that is one of the reasons he was traded by the Giants to the Browns.

Mar 25 John Mara admits he has a soft spot in his heart for Eli Manning. Mara, though, grew hot under the collar when it was insinuated he is keeping the 38-year-old quarterback around because of sentiment.
Daniel Jones' relationship with the Manning brothers and their honorary family member David Cutcliffe has led to speculation he is the quarterback the Giants really are targeting in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Mar 24 One year ago, John Mara stood in a posh resort in Orlando, Fla., and declared, "I'm sick of answering questions about Odell's behavior and what his latest incident is." It was a clear-as-day warning, Giants co-owner to Giants star receiver: Cut it out or you don't get that fat new contract you want.

Former Giants
Odell Beckham Jr. has mixed feelings about trade to Browns It feels as if part of him wanted to remain with the Giants and join the ranks of their all-time greats.

Mar 23 Kevin Zeitler learned from Browns' Joe Thomas but falls in line with Nate Solder, Will Hernandez. Since winning Super Bowl XLVI, the Giants have swung and missed almost annually at building an offensive line. Zeitler's job is to solidify the right side of the line of scrimmage.

Mar 22 Pat Shurmur loves new Giants, especially his offensive lineman. Shurmur now sees an answer for at least four of the five starting spots on the line. From left to right, the Giants have Nate Solder, Will Hernandez, either Jon Halapio (coming back from ankle surgery) or Spencer Pulley at center and Kevin Zeitler at right guard.

Former Giants
Landon Collins admits he would have held out had Giants franchised him.

Mar 19 Giants general manager Dave Gettleman continues to insist that he has a plan to make the Giants into a contender sooner than later. Just don't expect him to share any details. "Really and truly, very honestly, it's not my responsibility to tell you guys what I'm doing," Gettleman said Monday during a conference call.
Gettleman is trusting in an upgraded offensive line, a Saquon Barkley-centric offense and Good 'Ole Eli being forced to play catch-up because Landon Collins and Olivier Vernon are gone from a decimated defense. With no Beckham to bail him out. The good news is Manning isn't higher than the middle-of-the-contract pack for quarterbacks. "You can win while you're building," Gettleman said. Again: He's rebuilding.

Mar 18 Having traded away Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns last week, the Giants need to restock their receiver corps. Cody Latimer, will be re-signed. Latimer announced his return Sunday night on Twitter, posting: "Back for seconds!!!. Let's go big blue!!!" Latimer, 26, made an impression early last season before a hamstring strain in Week 6 put him on injured reserve.

Mar 17 Eli Manning gets $5M bonus from Giants and surest sign yet he is 2019 starter. Manning is due a $5 million bonus just for being on the roster on the fifth day of the 2019 NFL calendar (Sunday) under the terms of his contract. The bonus went into effect at 4 p.m. Saturday, according to ESPN. That is the close-of-business for NFL transactions, so Manning will be on the roster when Sunday begins and there is no wire on Sunday so any move wouldn't be official until Monday.

Mar 16 Grading the Giants' offseason moves so far Giants trying to replace Beckham, Collins and Vernon. Just 15 months ago, the Giants hired Dave Gettleman to fix the franchise. He earned praise for a series of early housecleaning moves. Now, suddenly, his new title is "embattled GM".

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie wasn't ready to ride off into the sunset and enjoy the retirement life. A week after being reinstated, Rodgers-Cromartie signed with the Washington Redskins.

Mar 15 Giants sign veteran safety Antoine Bethea. He has won a Super Bowl, played in three Pro Bowls, and amassed almost 1,500 tackles in 13 NFL seasons.
The Giants are back in the pass-rushing business, after they agreed to terms Thursday with Markus Golden, an outside linebacker with the ability to get to the quarterback.
Golden Tate's four-year, $37.5 million contract, with $23 million guaranteed, proves that the Giants aren't rebuilding. It also reinforces that Odell Beckham Jr. was traded primarily not to rebuild the roster, but because the club's brass didn't want him on the team anymore.

Mar 14 Former New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham is gone, but certainly his impact on the franchise won't be forgotten. Beckham, traded Tuesday to the Cleveland Browns, posted a message Thursday on Instagram to say goodbye to the Giants
There is an Odell-ness to Odell Beckham Jr. and, after five years, it eventually ran its course for the Giants. Some inside the building feel a sense of relief that the superstar receiver will no longer bring unwanted attention to a franchise that did not necessarily grow sick of him but grew increasingly exhausted trying to keep up with the issues.

Mar 13 The Giants are sending Beckham to the Browns in exchange for a first-round pick and a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, plus safety Jabrill Peppers - an East Orange native.
After five seasons, Odell Beckham Jr.'s career with the Giants is over, but what a five years it was. Here's a look at the many highs and lows.

Mar 12 Lose-lose for Giants: They don't keep Landon Collins, and now he agrees with rival Redskins. Where Giants general manager Dave Gettleman saw little value in paying big for Collins, the Redskins wasted no time in making spending lavishly on him and making Collins a centerpiece for the Giants' NFC East rivals.
Collins signing a blockbuster six-year, $84 million deal with $45 million guaranteed over the first three years from the Redskins is the worst possible nightmare for Giants fans still up in arms that Dave Gettleman allowed him to walk out the Big Blue door.

Mar 10 Special Report - So the Giants have unloaded another horrifically expensive commodity, linebacker Olivier Vernon, and obtained a useable, productive right guard from the Cleveland Browns, Kevin Zeitler. The trade, which includes a fifth-round draft pick going to the Giants and a fourth to the Browns, was unofficially announced Friday, but since the NFL's trading period doesn't start until next Wednesday, it couldn't be termed official.
But Zeitler, who graded out as the best pass-blocking guard in the NFL last season (he allowed just three sacks over the last two years) should automatically become a fixture at right guard, and along with last year's rookie, Will Hernandez, provide quarterback Eli Manning with some long-needed relief from the demons of defense. It would surprise no one if we heard that Eli bought him a car or a house or something of significant value to welcome him to the team. He might even be able to acquire cheaper health insurance, you know?

Mar 9 Dave Gettleman got off the canvas following the Landon Collins follies and made a good deal unloading Olivier Vernon for Kevin Zeitler, a quality bookend guard for Will Hernandez on an offensive line he vowed to upgrade when he arrived and a godsend for Saquon Barkley, Eli Manning and the quarterback's unidentified successor.

NFL Draft 2019: Where do Giants pick in all 7 rounds? | Enough assets to trade for Cardinals' Josh Rosen? With needs for starters at right tackle, cornerback, free safety, outside linebacker and possibly more, the Giants need to be active when free-agent negotiations begin Monday because they cannot rely on the draft to fill too many holes.

Mar 7 Separating fact from fiction in Landon Collins' departure from Giants What's Dave Gettleman's plan? Is this Eli's fault?

Mar 6 Giants blew it not trading Landon Collins and buying 2018 playoff delusions | Olivier Vernon next? Where's the foresight? Why are the Giants in this spot?
Gettleman has vowed to (re)build the Giants one brick at a time, but the foundation of his house isn't nearly as sturdy today without a brick such as Collins entering his prime.
These decisions are not made in a vacuum. That's what Giants general manager Dave Gettleman told us in Indianapolis last week when, truth be told, he was pretty up front about Landon Collins' uncertain future with the franchise.

Mar 3 Giants scoping out defensive lineman who can make an impact. The top two in this draft, Nick Bosa of Ohio State and Josh Allen of Kentucky, figure to be off the board in the first five picks, even if quarterbacks Dwayne Haskins and Kyler Murray are taken that high.

Mar 1 The Giants will always try to win. The faces change, but the expectations remain the same. But do not be fooled by thinking that they are a win-now team just because they're riding one more time with 38-year-old Eli Manning. Which brings us to The Case For Trading Odell Beckham Jr.

Feb 28 It's finding a franchise QB or bust for Dave Gettleman. Gettleman reminded us a year ago when he passed on Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Rosen with the second-overall pick that you better not draft a quarterback unless you have a conviction on him, because you risk finding yourself in Quarterback Hell if you swing and miss.
Dave Gettleman has a dream: 'I would love to drop a franchise quarterback in this place' Gettleman wants to follow 'the Kansas City model' in Manning's case. The situations are different, of course, but the philosophy is the same. He insisted "you can not reach," especially for a quarterback. The position is too important. The pick is too big.

Feb 27 Will Giants be blown away at combine, like they were with Saquon? Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur have no buyers' remorse for taking Barkley when they did.

Feb 25 Five free agents the New York Giants should consider. The NFL calendar is about to move away from its dead period into the annual scouting combine and soon after that, into free agency.

Feb 24 These five teams would likely pursue Landon Collins if Giants let him walk Two division rivals could be on the Pro Bowler's radar. If the Giants do use the franchise tag on Landon Collins, he'll have little realistic choice but to eventually sign it.

The significant front-office, coaching and scouting personal of all 32 NFL teams gather this week in Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine, and it would be appropriate for the teams to form two lines: one for franchises searching for a quarterback, and one for those that are not. The Giants could stand in both lines.

Feb 23 The NFL awarded the Giants a fifth-round pick Friday as part of its compensatory formula. The additional pick gives the Giants 10 selections in next month's draft.

Feb 22 Pat Shurmur will need to find a new defensive backs coach. His now former one, valued assistant coach Lou Anarumo, is leaving to be the Bengals' defensive coordinator.

NFL should adopt these intriguing rules from Alliance of American Football.

Feb 21 Special Report - There are two major subjects..., namely the situation with the quarterback Eli Manning and the immediate future of safety Landon Collins. Both could go, or both might stay. Eli may become the victim of the salary cap, since he makes nearly $17 million a year and the cap can use a little less pressure, especially from a 38-year-old athlete.
Collins just completed his fourth season in the NFL and is perhaps one of the top three safeties in the league. He is also without a contract, and as a free agent the Giants have only a few choices - put the Franchise tag on him to freeze his mobility for one full season or negotiate a new contract.

Feb 20 Michael Thomas has already left his stamp on the National Football League both on and off the field. And he's just getting started. An undrafted rookie out of Stanford University in 2012, Thomas got his start in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers.

Feb 19 There are many inadequacies, front to back, within the Giants defense and, if that defense moves forward without Landon Collins, there will be another gaping hole to fill.
Despite a torn labrum in his left shoulder cutting his 2018 season four games short, Collins still logged 96 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four pass breakups, and one forced fumble. However, Collins has never been an elite defender in coverage, and that has been evident over the past two seasons.

Feb 16 Should the Giants pass on a QB again at the top of 1st round? Shaun O'Hara says yes, but not for reason you think. But O'Hara isn't suggesting the Giants pass on Dwayne Haskins and Kyler Murray for offensive tackle Jonah Williams or another top blocking prospect.

Feb 14 Giants offensive line during Eli Manning's career: Here is a closer look at the revolving door of offensive linemen, including all draft picks since Manning arrived in 2004 (which includes only two first-round picks and one Pro Bowler) and the notable free agents added since the Giants' Old Guard needed replacing, beginning in 2011.
Nate Solder sees 2018 as 'good starting point' for OL. The key is to improve from Week 1 to Week 17, and while they still have a long way to go, there is no denying the Giants did that in 2018 under a new regime. After a 1-7 start, they went 4-4 in the second half, losing their final two games by one point apiece to playoff teams.

Feb 12 Kareem Martin eager to see defense in Year 2 under Bettcher. Kareem Martin played in James Bettcher's defensive system in Arizona in each of his first three NFL seasons. The Cardinals' defense ranked fifth, second and sixth in yards allowed over those three years from 2015 to 2017.

Feb 11 Here's why NY Giants could open 2019 NFL season against Super Bowl champion Patriots. We already know the Super Bowl LIII champion New England Patriots and the New York Giants will play each other in the regular season, and now here's something to consider: could Big Blue open the 2019 campaign in Foxborough as New England raises the banner to celebrate its sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy?

Feb 8 When the Giants' chief decision-makers are asked about quarterback Kyler Murray for the first time, they almost surely will be complimentary. But will their words be merely tall tales?

Feb 7 With his New York Giants looking to turn their 5-11 2018 season into a playoff spot in 2019, general manager Dave Gettleman has to avoid making the mistakes he made in his inaugural season on the job.

Feb 6 Eli Manning now has another great Super Bowl Sunday memory to add the bank. Manning and his wife Abby welcomed son Charles "Charlie" Elisha Manning just after midnight on Sunday morning, as first reported by Newsday. He is the couple's fourth child and Charlie will grow up with three older sisters.

Feb 5 Just as it took multiple years of personnel mismanagement to send the New York Giants to the bottom of the NFC East, it's going to take multiple years for the tandem of general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur to fix.

Feb 4 Not long after the confetti stopped falling on the Patriots, Saquon Barkley took to Twitter to post a simple message. "One day ...," he wrote and added the emoji of two hands clasped together in prayer. Do his Giants have a prayer to get to Super Bowl LIV in Miami?

Feb 3 Saquon Barkley named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. What the Giants speculated was true before the 2018 NFL Draft and what they believe was validated during this past season was made official Saturday night: Saquon Barkley was the best.
Saquon Barkley was a human life raft for the struggling NY Giants in 2018. He's been honored for his efforts by the writers who cover the NFL, earning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Saquon Barkley capped his extraordinary debut season here tonight when he was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year, matching the achievement of wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. in 2014. Fittingly, Beckham presented Barkley with the award at the eighth annual NFL Honors.

Feb 2 Over the next several weeks, the Giants are expected to make some decisions regarding some of their biggest cap eaters for 2019. In determining whom to cut and whom to retain, general manager Dave Gettleman is certain to review everything, including injury history and production.

Feb 1 Giants quarterback Eli Manning already has as many Super Bowl rings as his older brother Peyton Manning, but one of his former teammates thinks it might be time for Eli to follow his older brother's path, if he wants to finally get bragging rights.

Jan 31 Saquon Barkley's popularity continues to soar. Another example: the Giants' sensational running back is the Pepsi Rookie of the Year, a source confirmed.

Jan 30 Connor Barwin's first season with the Giants will be his only season with the Giants. He had little impact in 2018, which is why he will be officially released in the coming days.

Jan 27 Eli Manning is not expected to go anywhere. It is believed Gettleman and Shurmur are convinced the 38-year-old can function as a more-than-competent NFL quarterback.

Jan 26 Eli Manning TD passes: Here are all the Giants who have caught at least 1.
Recognize them all?

Jan 25 The Giants quietly have added 12 players to their roster -- some of whom were on the practice squad during the regular season -- since putting a bow on a disappointing 5-11 season.

Saquon Barkley was in a familiar situation during the Pro Bowl Skills Challenge - at least for one game. He was great, without a lot of help from his teammates.

Jan 22 Eli Manning's agent speaks: I think he'll return to Giants. Where the Giants go at quarterback is the decision of the offseason for a team that finished 5-11 in 2018 and again failed to make the playoffs. Manning started all 16 games and compiled a passer rating of 92.4, completing a career-high 66 percent of his passes for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Jan 21 The controversial outcome of the NFC Championship Game sent two Michael Thomases to the Pro Bowl. For Giants safety Michael Thomas, who was selected as a first alternate to the Rams' Cory Littleton in the one roster spot per conference reserved for a special teams standout, it will be the fulfillment of a career-long individual goal.

Jan 18 By the time next season begins, the Giants have to either replace Eli Manning, or know exactly how they're going to do it. They've known this was coming for years, but in each of the last two drafts, they still failed to select a replacement for Manning despite a plethora of franchise quarterbacks taken in each of the last two first rounds.

Former Giants
Plaxico Burress, who caught the Super Bowl XLII-winning touchdown from Manning in the upset of the then-undefeated Patriots in 2008, endorsed the idea of the Giants drafting Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Jan 16 General manager Dave Gettleman and the Giants still have plenty of work to do, if this team plans on returning to the playoffs for the second time in the past three years in 2019, but last year's rookie class showed plenty of potential. While Gettleman's moves in free agency last offseason were a mixed bag, at best, the Giants significantly increased the talent pool of the roster during NFL Draft weekend last April.

Jan 12 Much like his team, Evan Engram played his best football after the bye week. Engram caught 22 passes for 320 yards and touchdown in the final quarter of the season. In the first three, he had 23 receptions for 257 and two scores. Engram couldn't deny his satisfaction with the way the 5-11 season ended for him individually.

Early in the spring drills, Will Hernandez was installed as the starting left guard. He might well stay in that position for the next decade. Hernandez is a rugged run blocker and sturdy pass protector who has started every game and has improved significantly from early in the season to now.

Eli Apple - NFL Playoffs 2019: Will Eagles target Saints' Eli Apple?

Jan 11 Special Report - The basic facts are that out of 16 games on their schedule, the Giants had eight games against 2018 Playoff teams. Given such a poor record, one might intuit that New York would have gotten "smoked" in the great majority of these games, but that just wasn't the case, in general: Here is a brief summary of their games against eventual 2018 Playoffs teams, rating each game for how competitive it was.

Before the Giants give up on quarterback Eli Manning, they might want to take another stab at improving his offensive line. At least that's how one of Manning's longtime NFC East rivals, former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, sees it.

The NFL announced that linebacker Olivier Vernon has been named to the NFC Pro Bowl team. He will replace Chicago's Khalil Mack, who is unable to participate due to injury. Vernon will join two Giants teammates - rookie running back Saquon Barkley and kicker Aldrick Rosas - at the game.

Jan 9 Although the Giants did make progress in some areas, there is still a lot more work to be done by general manager Dave Gettleman and the rest of the front office if they are to continue building on the foundation they laid in 2018.

Jan 8 Ever since the Giants 2018 season ended, there have been any number of opinions put forth regarding what went wrong. Let's peel back some more layers on some of the most common theories behind the Giants 2018 struggles to see if those arguments actually hold water.

If Giants general manager Dave Gettleman wants to maneuver his way up or down in the 2019 draft, it looks as if he will have plenty of options to use as bargaining chips at his disposal.

Jan 6 If Eli Manning's Giants run is over, he leaves an unforgettable mark. Nothing lasts forever, and he will be fine no matter how this turns out. But the Giants will never see the likes of him again.

Dave Gettleman can talk all he wants about defense as root of Giants' deficiencies, but it's a false narrative. How can a GM trade talent in the name of a belated rebuild and then blame the unit that suffered from its reduction in talent for his team's losing, while excusing the offense of blame?

Jan 5 What conditions may Eli Manning accept in order to return with Giants? Giants may want Manning back, but on certain terms.
If the Giants truly want him back but at a reduced price, here is what likely has to happen: Manning has to bet on himself and the improvement he says he sees in the offense and accept less money.

Jan 4 What's next for Eli Manning and the Giants? "We believe in Eli. As we move forward here I think the plans here will reveal themselves," head coach Pat Shurmur said. "He can still play. He can still make the throws. He can still lead the offense."

Jan 3 Dave Gettleman knows how to make 35 minutes fly by. The dominant storyline was the future of Eli Manning and the quarterback position for the Giants, but unpacking Gettleman's 35 minutes of wisecracks and namedrops revealed some interesting perspective on a 5-11 season.
When Gettleman was asked if he would commit to Manning in 2019: "I'm committed to making the best decision in the interest of the New York Football Giants. We're in the evaluation process." And: "Everything is on the table for us."
Manning had a productive season statistically. He completed a career-high 66 percent of his passes (380 of 576), exceeded 4,000 yards for the seventh time (4,299) and threw 21 touchdown passes against 11 interceptions, the latter figure his lowest total in 10 years.

Jan 2 Eli Manning could become the first Giant to celebrate a Sweet 16. No player in the franchise's 94-season history of the Giants has worn the uniform for 16 seasons. If Manning is back as the starting quarterback in 2019, it will be his 16th season in a career that includes being the No. 1 NFL pick in the draft and winning two Super Bowl MVPs.
Make no mistake about it: The end of Giants quarterback Eli Manning's career is coming sooner than later. But with all apologies to those who are rooting with all their might for that end to happen sooner, as in after the 2018 season, it doesn't look very promising.

Jan 1 The Eli Manning-Giants marriage sure doesn't look like it's headed for divorce. "Everyone thinks I'm nuts, but I've seen the good in Eli," head coach Pat Shurmur said. "I believe everyone around him has to do their job as well. I believe in Eli. I believe in him."

Landon Collins wouldn't fight Giants' franchise tag. Landon Collins wants to return to the Giants, the team that moved up in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft to take him out of Alabama then made him a fixture in their defensive backfield.
