The Rams were too
good for the Giants this week.
The Giants got nowhere in the first half.
Two Kerry Collins INTs were run back for TDs in the 2nd half.
Giants Defense couldn't get to Kurt Warner, the Rams QB.
Gamegirl,
what did you think?
"I
thought the Giants had a shot. I thought they could do it.
They had a lot of missed opportunities, and those are the
kind of things you have to take advantage of if you want to
beat a superior team.
The Giants were able to come away trailing only 10-0 in the
first half against the Rams, and that was pretty good, but
as Mikefan says, the better team always comes out for the
second half, and this time it was the Rams. It's too bad,
because I thought the Giants had a shot.
They had chances, and they just let them get away.
Washington lost, and the Giants could have been tied for first
place."
As
it turned out, Arizona and Dallas also lost.
"That's
what I mean. There were too many lost chances for the Giants,
not just in that game, but over this whole year. By the way,
is it possible for a division championship team to get into
the playoffs with a .500 record?
I mean, it would be funny to see the NFC East division team
at 8-8 playing against the 10-6 wildcard, and realistically,
can that team go on to win the playoffs?"
Anything
else?
"Yes,
my Giants can still do it if they keep their heads in the
game next week against Minnesota, and last thing, I'd like
to thank Bill Parcells and the Jets for beating Dallas, and
giving them their first home game loss of the season.
I know my thanking Uncle Bill will drive Mikefan crazy!"
Mikefan,
what's your take?
"I
think Gamegirl nailed it. If the Giants played mistake free
football, they could have caught the Rams. Clearly, they're
not up to the level of play that an 11-2 team brings to the
field.
They have only two games to learn how to do itand it won't
matter if they make the playoffs, because they won't be in
them very long if they do, playing like they did against the
Rams."
So the Giants
don't look like a playoff ready team?
"They
know how to play the usual bunch that they face year in and
out, but if they somehow go on to the playoffs, they will
be facing tougher teams in their own stadiums.
After yesterday, I'd say they're not ready for that. There
was a lot of pushing and shoving going on in that game and
you would think that the Rams had some kind of history going.
I guess it just came down to the Rams getting the rap that
their record is based on beating weak teams all year, and
the Giants attitude that they were going to take the game
away from the Rams in their own stadium."
It didn't
work out that way.
"No,
not at all. The defense did allow only 17 points to the high
scoring Rams, and slowed Marshall Faulk to only 68 yards,
but the big thing they had to do was get to Rams QB Kurt Warner,
and they couldn't do that.
Also, players lost their cool at the expense of the team.
Keith Hamilton had a roughing the passer penalty on 3rd down,
when the Rams would have had to punt from their 13-yard line.
That was very foolish.
On offense, they gave up the other 14 points on two Kerry
Collins interceptions that were run back for touchdowns.
Their gameplay was stop and go, moving the ball good and making
first downs at times, even some big plays, and then stopping
themselves at other times.
RB Joe Montgomery makes it look like we have some kind of
running game, and the other teams have to respect it, but
still the Giants don't rack up big yards on the ground. All
in all, it wasn't a great effort. Both units need a lot more
consistency, and of course when you don't have it, you lose
games."
Anything
else?
"I
had a problem with that touchdown call in the 2nd quarter.
From one camera angle, it looked like the Rams receiver was
pulled out, and from the other camera angle, it looked like
he wouldn't have gotten his left foot down whether he was
touched or not.
Also, I'm glad that the Jets beat Dallas, despite what Gamegirl
thinks."
