GIANTS SIGN TIGHT END KELLEN DAVIS HE'S THE 14TH FREE AGENT TO JOIN THE ROSTER
AND MIGHT BE THE NEW STARTER By
Dave Klein
The Giants' number is now up to 24,
and nobody really knows when it will end. They
signed their 14th veteran free agent Friday, and added to the 10 of their own,
they have reached a couple of dozen.
Friday's acquisition was a tight end (a position at which they are embarrassingly
low) named Kellen Davis, who is 6-7 and weighs 265 pounds and played his first
five seasons with the Chicago Bears before signing on last year with the Super
Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. In actuality,
their number if 25, since they also signed wide receiver Travis Harvey, who has
no NFL experience, and you may count him if you like.
Davis was a fifth round pick of the Bears in 2008 out of Michigan State, signing
with Seattle on Sept. 13, 2013, just three days after the Seahawks' opening day
victory over Carolina. He played in the final 15 games, starting four, and caught
three passes for 32 yards. According
to a handful of scouts, he is an accomplished blocker for running plays and a
contributor in pass protection. Previously,
the Giants signed another member of the Seahawks, cornerback Walter Thurmond III.
For his career, Davis has played in
95 regular season games, starting 39, and has a total of 50 receptions for 561
yards and a dozen touchdowns. He played in all 80 regular season games with the
Bears and caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Jay Cutler in their NFC Divisional
Playoff game victory over Seattle in 2012. Harvey
is 6-2 and 185, signed as a rookie (undrafted) last year by the Tennessee Titans
but was released in training camp. He played at Florida A&M, but not as a freshman
or sophomore. As a senior, he caught 64 passes for 808 yards and seven touchdowns.
Davis joins three other tight ends on
the Giants' roster - Adrien Robinson, Larry Donnell and Daniel Fells - and almost
automatically becomes the "starter" until something better comes along or until
one of the others proves he can play the position.
***** ***** ***** ***** ***** So much
for loyalty. The new Giants' defensive end, Robert Ayers, will wear uniform number
91 - and if that sounds familiar, it's because it was Justin Tuck's number for
nine years. On the other hand, it is probably a question of few available numbers
to fit the category - no one is going to get the 92 worn by Michael Strahan until
the Giants officially retire it, and most of the others are taken. *****
