Giants at Jets
A Big Preseason Game?
Just some thoughts on this 'Giants - Jets - Brett Favre - NY area
impact' thing.
Football doesn't start for real for
about two more weeks, unless you're a NY Giant or Jet fan. The two
teams face off in usual fashion, as they have done for a number
of years, in a meaningless preseason game at the Meadowlands, but
this year there's one extra hook. In case you somehow haven't heard,
the Jets have imported a star quarterback to lead their team this
year, and his name is Brett Favre.
The last time Favre played in a regular
season game it was for Green Bay against this same Giants team in
the NFC Championship game. The Giants 23-20 win over Green Bay knocked
Favre's team out of the playoffs and propelled NY into a Super Bowl
match up against undefeated New England which the Giants went on
to win in dramatic fashion.
Bret Favre retired, the NY Giants
were heroes. Dave Letterman uncharacteristically recapped the football
game for most of his show and even had Giants Quarterback Eli Manning
on his show the next night. The Giants were paraded down Wall St.
Books were written. The 'Road to the Super Bowl' DVD sold like hotcakes
and all was said and done. The
next big story for this new football season would be 'Can the Giants
repeat?' Can they do it once more, show us that it wasn't all just
a fluke, and charm the city once again.
But wait... Before the suppositions
of the value of the draft picks, free agent signings, various opponents
and schedules could be delightfully argued one way or another, another
big story came along. Brett Favre wanted to come out of retirement.
OK fine - that's interesting to Green Bay and the fantasy football
players, and Vegas odds makers and all.
But that story grew steam in this
area when it seemed Favre might not be welcomed back to his old
team, and the Jets were interested in him. It seemed highly unlikely,
but it was a good enough story to cheer the poor Jet fans who suffered
through a 4-12 season while watching their teams own stadium partner
grab up all the glory.
Somehow and suddenly it all came true
and now it became 'The Story'. Jet fans couldn't wait to buy a Favre
number 4 green football jersey. Brett was greeted by Mayor Bloomberg
at City Hall, where he called him "Jet Favre" and gifted him with
a copy of his book, "Bloomberg by Bloomberg". What's this? Suddenly
the NY Giants were cast in the shadows for the first time since
the Super Bowl victory party. Hey guys, the Giants happen to play
here too, Remember?
Well, you don't have to revive your
memory. Even if all you care about is that legendary Brett Favre
guy and the Jets, you're stuck having to watch the Giants on Saturday
too as they play a suddenly less-meaningless preseason game in front
of all the area fans. In truth, Tom Coughlin said he will use his
starters for about a half and Eric Mangini will likely do the same,
so don't be late when you head to the game or watch on TV.
Jet fans are now talking ten or eleven
wins and the playoffs, and Giants fans are looking for a repeat.
Just remember it's still just a preseason game and we'll have to
wait to the end of the regular season see which team owns the city.
