Giants lose to the Eagles 34-17

"You can't wait for the season to start, but then when your team goes on a nine game losing streak, you can't wait for it to end. It didn't end well today. I was really hoping the Giants could close out the season with a win. The Eagles wanted it more, and they manhandled the Giants up front. Daniel Jones, as exciting as he was last week, brought no magic to this game. In the first half, Jones was missing on almost half his throws, and was getting no help from Saquon Barkley as the Eagles kept the pressure up.
When the second half started with the Giants down 10-3, it looked like things might change when Barkley ran the first play for 6 yards. The Eagles stopped him cold the next time, but Jones got a hot hand and completed all but one pass on this drive. He got them to a 2nd-and-1 on the Eagles 37 yard line. Barkley ran twice and couldn't make the first down. Going for it on fourth down, Jones ended up scrambling for 17 yards. His next pass was a 20-yard touchdown to Golden Tate to tie the score at 10-10.
The defense held, and when Jones completed a 33-yard pass to Darius Slayton, it looked like the Giants were taking control of this game. That ended fast when Barkley lost 3 yards on a 2nd-and-1, and an incomplete pass, followed by another on fourth down to give the ball back to the Eagles on their own 38 yard line. Carson Wentz, working with mostly backup players due to injuries, led them downfield, where his third-string running back ran the ball 15 yards, and then 7 yards into the endzone for a touchdown and 17-10 lead.
Barkley got the crowd excited, because on the next Giants play, he ran the ball 68 yards for a touchdown to tie the game once again. Things moved into the fourth quarter when Wentz hit one of his receivers with a 41-yard pass, and soon the Eagles kicked a 50-yard field goal to once again take the lead by 3 points. This time the Giants didn't come back. Jones was sacked, and then sacked again on the very next play, losing the ball, and the Eagles had it at the Giants 2-yard line. They ran it in to take a 27-17 lead.
The Giants went 3-and-out and on their next drive, went for a 4th-and-2 from their own 39 yard line with Barkley running for no gain. Four plays later the Eagles had another touchdown. The final score was 34-17, and with that, the Eagles will now move on to the playoffs. The Giants finished up with a 4-12 record, and they have a lot to figure out before the season starts next year."

"Coming off a 41-35 win over the Redskins you may have expected more. Last week Daniel Jones throw for a career high 352 yards, and a career best 5 touchdowns. Saquon Barkley rushed 22 times for 189 yards, and caught 4 passes for 90 yards, for a total of 2 touchdowns. Sure, those numbers came while playing against the Washington Redskins who haven't done at well this year, but, maybe, just maybe the Giants were getting it together. Wrong!
The Eagles' defense up front was too overwhelming. Barkley, on 17 carries for 92 yards, averaged 5.4 yards a carry with 1 touchdown, as it shows up in the box score, but if Barkley didn't break loose for one 68-yard run, you get a total of 24 yards for an average of 1.5 yards a carry. That was an overall improvement from the first half, where he ran the ball 5 times for 3 yards, and there were no rushing first downs in the first half.
There were only 4 from passing as Jones was 11 of 21 for 116 yards. The Giants were lucky to be down by just one touchdown at that point after scoring just one field goal with their six possessions. The Giants defense, which had allowed 5 touchdowns the week before, was able to hold the Eagles to just 1 touchdown and 1 field goal. They didn't have to contend with tight end Zach Ertz, who was out with cracked ribs, and a slew of other players Carson Wentz didn't have at his disposal.
In the second half, the Giants offense woke up a little bit. The Giants drove 76 yards in 10 plays on their opening drive. Jones connected with Golden Tate for a 20-yard touchdown to tie the game at 10-10. After the Eagles took back the lead with a 7-yard touchdown run by Boston Scott, Barkley came up with a big 68-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17-17.
That was the end of the good news for the Giants, as a field goal by the Eagles, and a bad snap fumble by Jones, which resulted in an easy touchdown on the following play, put the Eagles up 27-17. They scored again when the Giants gave them good field position after a failed fourth down conversion attempt. Daniel Jones, as far as the division goes, starts off his career with two wins over Washington, one loss to the Cowboys and another to the Eagles.
Some say that Pat Shurmur was coaching for his job this game, and the Giants surely are looking at many aspects. Still, it's hard to hide a 9 game losing streak sitting there on your resume. We'll have to see where it all goes. The Giants had liked Matt Patricia for head coach over Shurmur, but Patricia preferred Detroit. They're sticking with him, and over his two years the Lions have been 6-10, and 3-12-1. Shurmur was 5-11, and 4-12. He developed their new quarterback, had the players giving it there all to the end, and even got Eli Manning in for a final farewell."
