Gamegirl and 72,326
fans at the stadium got to see the best game the Giants have
played all season.
"They played like a football team today! It wasn't just
one player... It was the whole team playing like a team!
I don't want to understate what Kent Graham did. I mean, he
had better stats than Elway for the game, but it was everyone
stepping up and playing like they should have been playing
all season long.
The offense came up to the defense's level of game play, and
this is the Giants team that the fans thought they were going
to get to see playing this year."
Gamegirl was right of course. Kent Graham with his quarterback
rating of 67.3, was 21 of 33 for 265 yards, and John Elway
with his quarterback rating of 101.53, was 19 of 36 for only
180 yards.
"The officiating was good, and the Giants gave the fans
their money's worth, just barely staying ahead for most of
the game, while Denver controlled the ball with long sustained
drives.
Then of course, they let Denver go ahead, with only 1:49 left
so they could go for the storybook ending.
They even botched the kickoff return so they would have to
do it the hard way, coming from 86 yards back, and they capped
it off with a big pass play in the end zone.
They still left enough time for Elway to get a final shot
at winning, and he got them as far as the 30 yard line. What
a game!
Who writes these scripts for the Giants?"
Mikefan was looking
forward to hearing what Gamegirl had to say, and he concurred.
"It's funny, everyone thought that the Giants would have
to play to perfection to have any chance of beating the Broncos,
but it didn't happen. Gary Brown fumbled twice in the game,
and he hadn't lost a fumble in five years before that.
Hilliard fumbled too, kind of just dropping the ball as he
ran along. Charles Way dropped an easy pass that would have
gone for big yardage.
Toomer flubbed on the final kickoff return and lost 4 yards,
but still the team never let down, got past these things that
happened at all the wrong times, and played their hearts out.
I don't know who the better quarterback is, but Kent Graham
is truly a team leader, and if Danny Kanell can pick up that
trait from standing and watching on the sidelines, it will
be time well spent.
Other inspired players were Keith Hamilton, Chad Bratzke,
Corey Widmer, and Keith Hamilton who kept Denver out of the
endzone on that first long Bronco drive.
Gary Brown ran 18 times for 112 yards for an outstanding 6.2
yards a carry against the Bronco defense. That was some achievement!"
OK - Take a breath, we have to write this stuff down. Mikefan
smiled, and waited until we caught up, but then he was off
again.
It was good to see him this way for a change.
"Tiki Barber caught that 21-yard touchdown pass on 3rd
and 8 with 45 seconds left in the half. Toomer caught his
37 yard touchdown pass at the end of the game. Calloway, Hilliard,
Jurevicius, Way, Brown, Patten all caught passes. Conrad Hamilton
had ten tackles and one sack along with Bratzke and Strahan
for a total of 3 sacks.
They were in Elway's face all game. Downfield pass coverage
was great, and Shaun Williams got that interception. Let's
face it, you have to name the whole Giants team for yesterday's
win."
Anything else? We asked him, as though there could be more.
"Yes, we're all Giant fans here, but let's not look past
the excellent game play of Denver's Terrell Davis.
The guy was sick as a dog for the entire game, and still he
ran for 147 yards on 28 carries.
Denver totaled 170 yards on the ground and this guy had 147
of them.
Terrell even broke a 27 yard run for Denver's only touchdown,
the one that put them ahead in the game with only 3:28 left.
Along with complimenting the Giants for their win, the way
I see it for me and the Denver fans, Terrell Davis stands
at 14-0 on the season."
When Mikefan makes sense like that, we all here at Team Giants
have to second it.
