Gamegirl
told us she was happy to see a competitive Giants game for
a change.
"And it was on a real football field with grass and dirt
and even rain and all!" she was saying. Gamegirl really
likes the game on natural turf, and it looks like she might
get her wish next year.
Mikefan likes Instant Replay - if it's really 'instant' -
he always adds, and thanks to the Jets, he might get his wish
too.
It looks like Christmas is coming early this year for people
on this website.
Gamegirl continued her report, and it was good to se her so
exuberant for a change.
"It was the kind of Giant game that got you interested
in the Giants in the first place. The defense was really into
it, and Strahan was simply amazing! The more he did, the more
his teammates around him rallied, and the game was a real
nail-biter that could have turned on any play or series.
The offense keep up their end of the deal, slowly developing
a dominant running game that kept the ball out of Plummer's
hands, and the defense came alive after giving up too many
points in the first half, unfortunately, those penalties just
kept coming."
Gamegirl was on the mark. The Giants gave up 17 points in
the first half, and were flagged 13 times for 100 yards by
games end. She
continued,
"It was a great come from behind win, and a typical Giants
game at the end. They were never more than 6 points ahead
at their biggest lead, and the
Cardinals quarterback, Jake Plummer,
demonstrated that he could catch his team up at any point
given the opportunity.
It was exciting to watch, and even the coaching was good.
They took the announcers and a whole lot of fans by surprise
near the end of the game. It seemed like they blew calling
a time out, and they got hit with a penalty instead, but then
they followed it up by having Maynard run out of the endzone
for a Safety. It was all the right stuff to do."
We pointed out that it's a lot easier to find things to talk
about when your team wins.
"Yes it is, of course but win or lose, players playing
hard and good Giants football is what I like to see, and maybe
the Giants are in the right frame of mind right now to play
hard and tough against Denver."
As
usual, Mikefan had his own take on this game.
"Gamegirl had some good things to say about the Giants,
and they did win, but we can't overlook two very important
points that came across in that game.
Namely, the Giants can't pass, and they can't stop the pass.
Kent Graham completed only 8 of 23 passes for 144 yards and
had 2 interceptions - and don't forget that 87 of those yards
came from a screen pass to Tiki Barber that Arizona flubbed
on.
I'd look for Danny Kanell to make an appearance against Denver
next week unless Kent Graham comes out as hot and as strong
as he thinks he is, during the first part of that game."
Mikefan made a good point. It was the weakest of Kent Graham's
three starts.
"The Cardinals couldn't run against the Giants, getting
only 75 yards on the ground, but they picked up 263 yards
in the air, and would definitely have had way more if their
defense could have gotten the ball away from the Gary Brown
and Charles Way."
Mikefan made his point there too. Giants pass defense is poor.
So we asked him for his outlook against Denver.
"Well, I haven't really researched things yet, but let's
see.
Denver is the defending Superbowl Champions. They're undefeated
against all opponents for a 13-0 season so far. They have
a string of 18 consecutive wins counting last year.
I'd say for a true Giants fan - It's too close to call right
now."
