Next
week - San Diego:
What are they saying about the
Giants? Click
here to find out.
Gamegirl
was clearly disappointed. "There were way too many flags.
It's not like my Giants team to be playing this sloppy. "
She was right. By the end of the game, the Giants had 11 penalties
for 92 yards, add in last week's numbers and the Giants have
26 penalties for 182 yards. By no coincidence, they are 0-2
for that stretch.
She continued, "Where was the offensive line? Kanell
spent a lot of time on his butt." We nodded and told
Gamegirl that
Kanell said that this was probably the most he's been hit
in any game, pro or college.
Gamegirl shrugged her shoulders, "In the first quarter,
it was a war of punts, and then in the second quarter, points
flew up onto the scoreboard, unfortunately mostly by Dallas.
Deion Sanders started it off with his amazing 59 yard punt
return. Then our team scored next when Danny Kanell threw
a perfect 36
yard touchdown
pass to Toomer. It was nice to watch and is still in my mind,
but the Giants never scored after that."
We asked what she thought of Deion
Sanders. "What can you say? He's a great athlete for
Dallas, and exciting to watch on the field. I guess along
with Aikman, and then Emitt Smith, we needed him to be out
of the game also for any chance to win. What's our team coming
to?
They needed to come off that disappointing loss to the Raiders
with a great game against Dallas. That would have put them
in great position in
our division and they
could have built on it for the rest of the season. Instead
they gave us a tribute to Deion night, and opened a lot of
questions."
We agreed. It was certainly a Deion Sanders night. He returned
a punt 59 yards for one score, returned an interception 71
yards for another, and grabbed a 55-yard pass from Jason Garrett
to set up a third.
Gamegirl seemed a bit tired at this point, either from staying
up late on Monday night, or from having to recount the game
to us. She agreed and said that a win over Chargers would
help perk her up.
You hear that Giants? We want Gamegirl back to her old self!
As
expected, Mikefan was down in the dumps when we caught up
with him.
"I was totally surprised by what happened last night.
They were coming off a bad game with Fasell yelling at them
all week and this was such a big game, a game too big to lose.
I mean, like 'Will the real Giants please stand up! Better
yet, 'Will the real Giants please take the field and PLAY!'
There was so much enthusiasm and body language in what Mikefan
was saying, that we had to take a step back.
"Just as Gamegirl pointed out, there were too many penalties.
Since when do the Giants get 15, and then 11 penalties in
back to back games? I guess as far as penalties go, the stink
of that Raider game is still with the Giants and they can't
shake it." We took an extra step back.
"Dallas came up with just 7 interceptions
all of last year, and they picked up 3 against the Giants
in just that one Monday night game.
Offensively
the Giants stunk. It didn't matter if it was Wheatley, Way
or Barber. All they got was 56 yards rushing. The
offensive line couldn't stop any of the Dallas blitzes. Danny
Kanell was 25-of-45 for 228 yards and was sacked four times
for 34 yards.
Kent Graham came in late to relieve Kanell from being the
official punching bag, and he threw a late interception.
The defensive unit made it their thing to stop the run, allowing
only 80 yards on 29 attempts, but they must have been playing
the run all game. Jason
Garrett
was no star for Dallas. He
threw 12 of 28 passes for 222 yards, but the Giants didn't
sack him once, and
allowed this Aikman stand-in to make the big passing plays
when he needed it!"
Backing up, we asked Mikefan about special teams. His reply
was, "You saw the game and watched Deion. Don't even
ask!"
We figured now was as good a time as any to wrap it up. We
wanted to know if Mikefan had any message to put forth to
the players. He turned and stared at us, and his response
was, "Rent any of the Rocky movies, get some 'eye of
the tiger', and bring it with you to San Diego."
